Stay Healthy and Enjoy the Outdoors

Get Outdoors May is one of the most beautiful months in Maryland, and as long as it’s done safely, there are plenty of places and opportunities to get out in nature while complying with social distancing measures. After all, fresh air and sunshine are good for our health.  

Following Governor Larry’s Hogan’s Update Regarding Maryland’s Stay at Home Order and Opportunities for Outdoor Recreation, individual and small group sports are now permitted and closed functions at state parks are reopened, including all state beaches and playgrounds

If you’re looking for a state park in the Four Rivers area, Franklin Point State Park in Shady Side is a beautiful 477 acre peninsula nestled among the Chesapeake Bay, Deep Creek and Flag Pond. Franklin Point State Park is a gated park with a combination lock. Access to the park is limited due to site conditions and capacity. Park only in the designated parking area to the left beyond the gate.

Anne Arundel County parks remain open for exercise activities only, including jogging biking, walking, and hiking. However, visitor centers, playgrounds, restrooms, dog parks and basketball courts remain closed. Recreational boating is now be permitted as long as it can be done safely. Boaters must follow current social distancing requirements.

Many county parks are located within the boundaries of the Four Rivers Heritage Area. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay, Beverly Triton Beach Park offers passive recreation, such as walking trails, cartop boat launch and fishing. Quiet Waters Quiet Waters Park is situated between the South River and Harness Creek. Visitors can enjoy trails winding through forests and past grassy fields.

For some true social distancing, head to southern Anne Arundel County and visit Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and Jack Creek Park Note that Jack Creek Park is a gated park with a combination lock. Access to the park is limited due to site conditions and capacity.

In the City of Annapolis, Truxton Park is open for public use. There you’ll find walking trails and a boat ramp.

And don’t forget, Annapolis Maritime Museum has a Park Campus located in Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park, 7300 Edgewood Road. This is a renovated, 12-acre waterfront park. Canoe and kayak launches are currently available at both the Park as well as at the McNasby Oyster Company (Eastport) campus.
