September 22 is the first day of autumn! Fall is for heritage, so read on to see the events that are happening in the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area this week.

Mr. Paca’s Garden Storytime: “Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story”

Join Historic Annapolis on select Tuesday mornings for storytime and fun activities in the William Paca Garden, a secret treasure in the Historic District of Annapolis. Each program is designed for little ones (3-7 years) with a book reading, song, craft/art project, and free time in the garden. 

This Week’s Book: Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, by Kevin Noble Maillard

Celebrate Native American Day with us and read Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story. This story shares the rich tradition, culture, and family life of a Native American family. We’ll learn that fry bread is an important dietary staple that became a part of many Native Americans’ diets. We’ll also learn about and discuss the Susquehannock, Choptank, and Piscataway tribes that were in Maryland. We will create decorative crafts, visit Farmer Ben in the garden, and take home our very own fry bread recipe!

Cost is $10 per Child and $5 per Adult for General Admission; $8 per Child and Free for Adults for HA Members and Active Military; $5 per Child and Free for Adults for Family Circle Members. 

Species Loss in Maryland: What Has Happened and How to Prevent Further Loss

A 2019 report showed that North America has lost nearly 3 BILLION birds since 1970 alone. But birds aren’t the only species experiencing immense decline. Maryland is not unique in dramatic declines of plant and animal species. This session will discuss what has happened and how to prevent further loss.

Webinars are available for $15/session or register for all four for $50. Members are encouraged to use their member benefit code when registering to enjoy the series at no cost.

Jane Austen Tour

  • Date: Wednesday, September 21
  • Time: 2:00-3:30 pm
  • Location: Hammond-Harwood House, 19 Maryland Ave, Annapolis
  • Host Organization: Hammond-Harwood House

Participants will enjoy a 90-minute guided tour of the house that compares the customs and social graces of the Loockerman family, who lived in the Hammond-Harwood House in the early 19th century, with those of characters in Jane Austen novels. Cost to participate is $12 or free for members.

Chesapeake Crossroads FY23 Mini-Grant Workshop

MANDATORY FOR ALL APPLICANTS — Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area is pleased to announce the availability of our Fall 2022 (FY23) Mini-Grants!

This grant round is expected to be highly competitive; partial funding awards are likely. To learn more, applicants must send a representative to attend a mandatory zoom workshop on Wednesday, September 21 at 3 p.m. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] to register, to discuss your project, to ask questions, or for more information! This workshop is free to attend.

The Best Place – For All Mural Artists’ Signing & Celebration

Please join County Executive Steuart Pittman, the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, and the Annapolis Arts District for The Best Place – For All Mural Artists’ Signing & Celebration on Thursday, September 22nd 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Arundel Center Parking Lot, 44 Calvert Street, Annapolis.

Come celebrate Anne Arundel County’s newest mural: The Best Place – For All Mural. Join us to appreciate the beautiful and interactive artwork of local artists Cindy Fletcher-Holden and Comacell Brown Jr. as they sign their work to complete the mural.

Live music will be provided by The Groove Spot Band & Show, and refreshments will be provided by We Care and Friends and Kona Ice Truck. This event is free to attend.

September Sunsets Fall Concert Series

The fun of the Annapolis Maritime Museum’s summer concert series will continue this fall at their Park Campus (located at 7300 Edgewood Rd in Annapolis). Join them on Thursdays in September from 6 to 8 p.m. for music by the Bay! Listen to music from Rickshaw Lizard.

Concerts are free; however, donations are gratefully accepted. Beer and wine are available for purchase. Beverage sales support the Museum’s education program. No outside alcohol is permitted. Food trucks will be on site. Bring a chair for seating.

Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival

In September 1987, the Kunta Kinte Celebration was born in Annapolis, Maryland. Now known as the Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, the festival is a celebration of the perseverance, education, and cultural heritage of Africans, African Americans, and Caribbean people of African descent. The festival is a volunteer-run event organized by the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc.

MHAA funding supports this important annual event! This event is free to attend.

West Annapolis Oktoberfest

Join the West Annapolis Business Affiliation for the annual West Annapolis Oktoberfest with 115 vendors, 15 food trucks or tents, 2 beer trucks, 1 band, 1 children’s choir, 1 block for kids fun, an entire day of delicious entertainment for your friends, teams, groups and neighbors. 5% of all proceeds from the 30th Annual West Annapolis Oktoberfest celebration will be donated to the Kidz Coping program at Wellness House of Annapolis.

Maryland Hall Movie Night: “The Gaucho”

There is no experience quite like watching a film accompanied by live music. A story unfolding on screen is amplified by music which responds to its plot turns, making emotions bigger and characters more vivid. Acclaimed silent film musician Andrew Earle Simpson comes to Maryland Hall to partner two silent films with new music created in real time.

On Sunday, Sept 25, swashbuckling silent screen star Douglas Fairbanks stars in THE GAUCHO (1927). Mexican-born actress Lupe Velez stars as the Mountain Girl who sees a miraculous vision which impacts the world around her as well as the dashing bandit who crosses her path.

Full of adventure, action, and romance, THE GAUCHO shows what happens when a bandit meets a saint, and a would-be dictator comes to town.
