The Freeing of Ivy Neck and Tulip Hill Slaves

Mr. Colhoun is directly descended from a number of the Puritan founders of Anne Arundel County and is a 12th generation historian, farmer and owner of Ivy Neck Farm located in Cumberstone.
From his talk and photos (never before seen photographs from the Ivy Neck collection) you will learn about the 1843 freeing of the Ivy Neck and Tulip Hill slaves, and the legal complications that had to be over come to allow this to take place. And how his great, great, great grandfather James Cheston Sr. on his death bed, wrote a will freeing his 77 slaves; how the courts threw out the document, and how his son-in- law, Dr. Casper Morris prevailed.
Included in the presentation is this photograph of one of the extremely rare grave stones. It is thought that the cemetery may contain hundreds of burials over several hundred years.
Light refreshments will be served following the presentation at the Galesville Heritage Museum.
