Step back in time with Curator Rachel Lovett and Food Historian Joyce White to learn about the cooking and dining traditions of the 19 th century residents of Hammond-Harwood House, both free and enslaved. This one-hour, on-site special tour will focus on the kitchen, breakfast room, and dining room. In addition, each participant will receive a small box of historic treats to enrich the learning experience. The Hammond-Harwood House will be decorated for the month of December. African American Experience Tour at Hammond Harwood House

Join Hammond-Harwood House docent William Ridgley for an African American Experience Tour at the Hammond-Harwood House. The African American Experience Tour will cover the stories of men and women, both enslaved and free, who built, maintained, and lived in Hammond-Harwood House.
 
A focus will be three enslaved women — Mary, Matilda, and Juliet — who worked at the house in the early to mid-19th century.
 
Other topics include how petitions for freeing certain enslaved men and women were handled, the aims of the American Colonization Society, and the successes and setbacks of one early African-American artist. Reservations Requested.

Hammond-Harwood House Special Exhibition-Marvin Ross: Monuments Man

The exquisite collection of furniture and fine art acquired for the Hammond-Harwood House has benefited from the expertise of trained museum professionals. Marvin Ross (1904-1977), an early trustee, is a prime example. Ross, who was an expert on the Byzantine era, led an extraordinary life as Curator of Medieval and Subsequent Arts at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and later as the first curator of Hillwood, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post’s private estate in northwest Washington, D.C. During World War II, Ross was a member of the “Monuments Men”  — the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section of the Allied Forces.
