November Lunch and Learn: Naturally Beautiful: Uncovering Nature at Homewood Museum

November 6, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Speaker: Michelle Fitzgerald, Assistant Curator at Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Museum.

Stories of shifting attitudes about nature and its material uses are archived today in the objects in Homewood Museum’s collection. High-style tables that resulted in mass deforestation of the mahogany tree in the Caribbean, early nineteenth-century soup tureens that remain empty from overfishing in the Chesapeake all speak to ways in which Marylanders’ consumption habits, including Homewood’s Carroll family, had lasting global environmental impacts. Examining the ways in which the decorative arts both contributed to both the destruction and preservation of the earth, this lecture will take a look at a few featured objects in the Homewood collection and its relationship to the local environment. Please join assistant curator at Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Museum and former Maryland State Archives staff member, Michelle Fitzgerald for this engaging program. All our welcome, please bring your lunch and your questions.

Registration: Please email or call Emily Oland Squires to RSVP to this free event at [email protected]or 410-260-6443.
