It is the year 1774, and you can listen in on an intimate conversation…hear the latest in poultices, salves, and patent medicines for what ails you from a colonial midwife, Charlotte Small, as she gives advice of the era to printer Annapolis printer, Anne Catharine Green, whose daughter is in childbed…for the 11th time. Did you know? Coffeehouses aren’t new to Annapolis! Even in the era of Mr. Paca, coffeehouses were a place to meet. Mary Howard, proprietress of the Maryland Coffeehouse will be setting up shop at Hogshead Tavern on Saturday, November 18. Learn more about 18th century coffeehouses and taverns from Mrs. Howard, as she displays some of the tools of her trade. Advance registration not required. Come meet the United States Colored Troops (USCT), Union Army regiments during the U.S. Civil War that were primarily comprised of African Americans. Volunteer members of Company B  will share their in-depth understanding of the Civil War era through performing demonstrations of camp life, military service and general values of the Black Civil War soldier. Hogshead Living History: Laundry Day

Stop by Hogshead on Saturday, September 30, and you’ll find out how laundry was done in the 1800’s! Meet our presenter, Roberta Perkins, and learn about Maria Maynard, a free African American laundress who worked in Annapolis before the Civil War. See wooden tubs, washboards, irons, soap and see what it took to complete this laborious chore in the 19th century. Visitors can participate in washing small pieces of clothing!
