Social Media Opportunity! Celebrate Women’s Suffrage

Phone and Social MediaWe wanted to make our heritage partners aware of a new social media opportunity offered by University of Maryland’s Historic Maryland Newspaper Program in partnership with the Maryland State Archives.

About the Campaign

Pamela McClanahan of the Historic Maryland Newspaper Program (HMNP) at the University of Maryland Libraries and Maria Day at Maryland State Archives (MSA) are creating a joint social media campaign to highlight historic newspapers in the state.

Their focus will be women’s suffrage in commemoration of the centennial of the passing of the 19th amendment.

They would like to invite other cultural heritage institutions from throughout the state to participate as well as to share the history of women’s suffrage in Maryland.

How to Participate

Share a story, unique object, photograph, newspaper article, etc. related to women’s suffrage in Maryland or about the broader women’s suffrage movement. The only requirement is that it must have been created or published in Maryland.

Post anytime the week of August 17 – 21 (since the actual anniversary date for the ratification of the 19th amendment by Congress is August 18) using the original campaign hashtags: #MDSuffrage and/or #MarylandWomenVote.

You may contribute as little or as much as you like – one post or multiple posts is just fine. If you use a clipping from a Maryland newspaper in Chronicling America, please also include these hashtags in your post: #Chronicling America and #HistoricMDNews.

Post to any social media platform of your preference. For example, Maryland State Archives mostly uses Instagram and Facebook, while HMNP mostly uses Twitter. You’re encouraged to follow the hashtags and reshare content from other participants, even if you do not have the time to create social media posts yourself!

If your institution plans to participate, please contact Maria Day at [email protected] or Pam McClanahan at [email protected]. That way they can keep their eyes on your feeds to find, reference, and reshare any posts with the hashtags from Maryland organizations.
