FREE Guide to Cemetery Art in Anne Arundel County

September 24, 2020

Cemetery ArtAre you interested in learning more about the diverse and symbolic images present in our local historic cemeteries? Anne Arundel Genealogical Society offers a new guide to Anne Arundel County Cemetery Art. This publication was prepared by Christine N. Simmons and made possible through a grant from the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County and the the Trader Foundation For Maryland Burial Sites, a group that funds cemetery projects in Maryland.

The goal of the project is to show examples of the variety of artwork that can be found in Anne Arundel County cemeteries. Photographs show the information that can be found on tombstones, and illustrate how materials and styles of tombstones have changed over time. Examples include handmade tombstones, sculptures and carvings, unique personalization, portraits, group affiliations, tombstone makers’ signatures, and unique designs.

A free printed booklet will be available at the Kuethe Library and various sites throughout the county. The web version is available on the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society’s site, the AA Co. historic cemeteries website, and the Coalition to Protect Maryland Burial Sites website. You can also contact Tina Simmons at [email protected] with your questions or for copies of the brochure.
