Fall is for Heritage! And October is the Month for Ghost Tours and Pumpkin Walks
Here in the Four Rivers Heritage Area, we love to share events sponsored by our partners, and we know what October means to you, ghosts and pumpkins! Here are some appealing fall events you won’t want to miss.
First, looking for something spooky? Make sure to check out one of our recently added heritage sites. The Rising Sun Inn in Crownsville is offering their Historic Candlelight Ghost Stories Tour this weekend. The tours will be held October 15-16 from 6:00-10:00 pm. The Rising Sun Inn, with a history spanning four centuries, has been home to many generations of families. Learn about the lives of some of those residents and learn about those residents who never left. This family-friendly ghost stories tour is suitable for visitors of all ages. Hear stories collected from first-hand accounts of ghostly encounters; tour areas of the Inn not regularly open to the public, and top the evening off with some cider and cookies. While this event promises to be family-friendly, the Inn will be dark with the exception of candlelight. Families with younger children may want to join us during the first hour take advantage of the fading daylight.
Annapolis is also steeped in haunted history. Our friends at Historic Annapolis are offering their Historic Hauntings Ghost Tours every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during October. On this walking tour, you will be led by our spirited guide through the dark alleys, spooky side streets, and lesser-known haunted sites of the old and creaky town of Annapolis. Hear of real diary entries and newspaper articles of what frightened early 18th century folks and how they utilized the moon and candles. Listen to tales of spirits that linger in the mist, and explore one of Annapolis’ best-known cemeteries. Special Historic Hauntings takes you back to a time of superstition and legend. And who knows, after a trip inside Hogshead, your own story may be added to the history of Annapolis.
Looking for something more to do with the kids? Don’t miss Hammond-Harwood House’s Pumpkin Walk Reimagined, which has been held in Annapolis for over twenty years. Families will begin by enjoying a superstitions tour of the mansion to learn about curious customs of the 18th century. The fun will continue with a parade and end with activity stations in our fenced-in garden: witch storytelling, pumpkin toss, and a take-home craft. Costumes encouraged!
Speaking of pumpkins, October is also a time to celebrate a glorious harvest, so make sure to visit your local farmers market. The Anne Arundel County Farmers’ Market is now in it’s 40th year. The market is open Saturdays 7:00 am – 12:00 pm and Sundays 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Enjoy!
