SUMMARY:Odenton Heritage Society New Exhibit! “Electronic Messaging Since 1844: Email and Text Are Older Than You Think”
DESCRIPTION:On November 1\, the Odenton Heritage Society will unveil a new display\, “Electronic Messaging Since 1844: Email and Text Are Older Than You Think.” The display explores how Americans used the telegraph for personal and business communication long before the advent of computers and the Internet.\n\nDiscover the dawn of America’s electronic age on May 1\, 1844\, when Samuel Morse’s collaborator\, Alfred Vail\, gathered news from railroad passengers at Annapolis Junction and telegraphed it to Washington in seconds—an hour before the passengers arrived in the city to share the news by word of mouth. \nLearn how the telegraph and teleprinter transformed communication from the 1840s through the 1980s. Explore early forms of social media using telegrams\, text messages transmitted via stock tickers\, and personal electronic messaging for the deaf—all decades before personal computers and smartphones became commonplace. \nThe Odenton Heritage Society Historical Center is located at 1367 Odenton Road and is open the first Sunday of every month from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.  Admission is free\, and visitors can enjoy guided museum tours led by costumed docents.Help us preserve Odenton’s history for future generations! While visiting\, please consider becoming a member of the Odenton Heritage Society. As an all-volunteer organization\, we rely on the generosity and support of our members to preserve\, celebrate\, and share Odenton’s rich history. Your membership makes a meaningful difference in keeping our community’s history alive!

SUMMARY:Tick-Tock Clock Tour
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Hammond-Harwood House collection of nine elaborate clocks from the 17th\, 18th\, and early 19th centuries. Docent Bob Mulcrone will begin the tour with an in-depth history of timekeeping from sundials to Chinese water clocks. The invention of the pendulum in the 17th century modernized horological devices and a rising artisan class created clocks for elite and middle-class markets as consumer demand expanded. The tour will examine each item\, admiring the individual creation of the piece\, its decorative design\, and the social history connected to it. You will come away from this experience with a better appreciation for what time meant to our ancestors as well as how we tell time today. \nPrice: $15 | Members: $0

SUMMARY:Discovering American Art: The Birth of Revolutionary Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, an 18th-century Anglo-Palladian house with a collection of American paintings and furniture\, is hosting its annual Discovering American Art lecture this year on the build-up to the American Revolution. Portraits of revolution-minded colonists and historic accounts of protest against taxation and other forms of oppression tell the story of events in the colonies. Many in America still saw themselves as British citizens and tried to maintain that lifestyle\, while others were beginning to resist the Crown and demand independence. A newly displayed portrait featuring Governor Horatio Sharpe provides a fascinating back story to the British point of view. \nPricing for this event includes both lectures as well as food and drink at the reception after. \nSchedule:\n1:30 p.m. Door open\n2:00 p.m. Sons of Liberty: The Conversation Begins\, presented by Lucinda Dukes Edinberg\n3:00 -3:15 p.m. Break\n3:15-4:15 p.m. The Art of Conversation: British and American Painting in the 18th Century\, presented by David Gariff\n4:15 p.m. Reception \nPrice: 55 | Members: 50 \nTo make a reservation call:410-263-4683 x10

SUMMARY:Fiber Options 2026 Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate all the incredible work featured in this year’s Fiber Options Show! \nTextile arts are a method of telling stories of war\, politics\, religious and mythical tales\, and other folklore. From ancient Chinese garments and medieval European tapestries to Indigenous American weavings\, nearly every culture has embraced techniques like embroidery\, sewing\, appliqué\, quilting\, and weaving to pass down narratives and traditions. Technology and techniques continue to evolve. To combat staggering amounts of textile waste\, artists can recycle and repurpose fabric into sustainable masterpieces. Think about the intersections of function\, purpose\, and beauty and how you can use fibers to create artwork. \nMFA seeks creative work using natural or synthetic textiles and/or fabric as a medium for artistic expression. Mixed media work incorporating textiles or textile techniques such as weaving or embroidery are also encouraged. Work that is simply a depiction (i.e. paintings\, photos\, prints) of fiber art will not be accepted. \nMaryland Federation of Art (MFA) invites all artists residing in any of the states or territories of the US\, Canada\, or Mexico to enter our biennial Fiber Options exhibition. All original 2D or 3D work incorporating the use of textiles and following exhibition guidelines will be considered. MFA exhibitions are blind juried by professional and credentialed art experts. Works selected by the juror will be exhibited in MFA’s Circle Gallery from October 28 – November 21\, 2026. Exhibition Chair: Angela Petruncio.
