DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Frazier\, Director of Reference Services at the Maryland State Archives\, for a hands-on workshop and learn how to research and navigate land records. \n\nThis program will begin with a presentation about using Maryland’s online land records system. In the second half\, you will dig into hands-on\, pre-planned activities to experience land research first hand. Whether you’re an experienced researcher or new to using land records\, there will be lots to learn! \nRanging from the colony’s recorded documents to the present day\, land records have incredible value for historical\, genealogical\, and property research. \nRachel Frazier\, is Director of Reference Services at the Maryland State Archives\, has a masters degree in library and information sciences. She has has worked for the Archives for sixteen years\, beginning with the Study of the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland. The Reference Department serves visitors with many needs—historical\, genealogical\, and legal. Rachel is the recipient of the 2024 Ancestry Leadership Award\, and making archives fun\, accessible\, and welcoming is an ongoing goal of Rachel and her colleagues.

SUMMARY:Archaeological Discovery of the 1660s Jesuit Chapel and Priests’ House at Newtown
DESCRIPTION:As part of its 350th anniversary commemoration of its founding\, the Parish of St. Francis Xavier in Newtown\, St. Mary’s County\, commissioned an archaeological search for its 1660s chapel. The Environmental Archaeology Lab found it and vidence of a previously unsuspected house for the Jesuit fathers and lay brothers. The chapel contrasts with that found at St. Mary’s City and reconstructed by the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission. In this talk\, the Lab will highlight how differences reveal aspects of religious intolerance and Catholic resistance in the County during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Professor Lawrence Jackson will describe the life and works of William Levington\, the founder of the St. James First African Protestant Episcopal Church in Baltimore in 1824. The church\, now known as St. James in Lafayette Square\, recently celebrated its 200th anniversary. \nLawrence Jackson is the author of the award-winning books Chester B. Himes: A Biography (W.W. Norton 2017)\, The Indignant Generation: A Narrative History of African American Writers and Critics (Princeton 2010)\, My Father’s Name: A Black Virginia Family after the Civil War (Chicago 2012) and Ralph Ellison: Emergence of Genius\, 1913-1952 (Wiley 2002). His latest books are Hold It Real Still: Clint Eastwood\, Race\, and the Cinema of the American West (Johns Hopkins University Press 2022) and Shelter: A Black Tale from Homeland\, Baltimore (Graywolf 2022). He teaches English and history at Johns Hopkins University and writes occasionally for Harper’s Magazine.
