SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture – Lafayette’s Musical Reception: Annapolis\, 1824
DESCRIPTION:At the invitation of Congress and President Monroe\, the Frenchman/American General Lafayette toured America for more than a year\, 1824-25.  A young confidant of General Washington and one of the few surviving heroes of the American Revolution\, the then-aged Frenchman traveled to all 24 of the current states and was greeted by massive public celebrations – dinners\, balls\, military displays\, and more.  Mid-December of 2024 marks 200 years since General Lafayette came to Annapolis.  As chairman of the national music committee with American Friends of Lafayette\, Dr. David Hildebrand has\, for well over a year\, been unearthing\, bringing to life\, and disseminating much of the music composed for and presented to Lafayette when visiting Maryland and beyond.  This lecture will reveal the style and character of this 200-year-old music\, gathered from period music sources\, and it will include both live and recorded musical examples of songs\, marches\, dance tunes\, and more.  \nAdvanc registration required; registration closes one half hour prior to lecture. \nCost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members\, Military\, and HA Docents

Meet and greet the author Joyce White\, get your copy and have it signed. \nIn 1963\, the Hammond-Harwood House Association published Maryland’s Way\, The Hammond-Harwood House Cook Book\, which includes over 700 recipes sourced from centuries old manuscript recipe books and contributions from Marylanders from across the state. Since its inception over 60 years ago\, it has sold over 100\,000 copies and is still in demand today. \nIn the new companion book\, Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine\, food historian Joyce M. White\, supported by several contributing authors\, reflects on the chief cultural influences of Maryland’s early foundational cuisine: Native American\, African American\, German\, and British. \nExtensive research on both the foods and their method of preparation brings the history of Maryland’s diverse cuisine into sharp focus. Voices of key individuals who shaped Maryland’s early culinary history are also resurrected. DESCRIPTION:Join the Odenton Heritage Society for our Holiday Open House on Sunday\, December 1\, from 1 to 4 PM! \nEnjoy free tours of our museum and support our all-volunteer work by visiting our bake sale\, featuring delicious homemade treats donated by our wonderful volunteers and members. All proceeds go directly to our preservation efforts. \nThe OHS Historical Center Museum presents more than 150 years of local history through objects\, photographs\, and Audio-Visual programs.  Our 1912 Colonial Revival two-story building has been restored and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in August 2022. It is located at 1367 Odenton Road.  Admission and tours of our museum are free.

SUMMARY:Untangling the Mysteries of Maryland Land Records
DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Frazier\, Director of Reference Services at the Maryland State Archives\, for a hands-on workshop and learn how to research and navigate land records. \n\nThis program will begin with a presentation about using Maryland’s online land records system. In the second half\, you will dig into hands-on\, pre-planned activities to experience land research first hand. Whether you’re an experienced researcher or new to using land records\, there will be lots to learn! \nRanging from the colony’s recorded documents to the present day\, land records have incredible value for historical\, genealogical\, and property research. \nRachel Frazier\, is Director of Reference Services at the Maryland State Archives\, has a masters degree in library and information sciences. She has has worked for the Archives for sixteen years\, beginning with the Study of the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland. The Reference Department serves visitors with many needs—historical\, genealogical\, and legal. Rachel is the recipient of the 2024 Ancestry Leadership Award\, and making archives fun\, accessible\, and welcoming is an ongoing goal of Rachel and her colleagues.

DESCRIPTION:Men of Irish heritage played crucial roles in fighting the American Revolution\, siding with the patriots against the British Army in overwhelming numbers. In this evening program\, the English-born but American-trained historian Richard Bell explores the Revolution from the perspective of the Irish and their descendants in America. Drawing on the latest scholarship\, Bell reconstructs the history of English and Irish antagonism\, the role of Roman Catholic religious faith in decisions about loyalty and affiliation\, and the political and economic impact of the American Revolution on Ireland itself.   \nAdvance registration required.
