SUMMARY:Candlelight Historic Ghost Stories Tour
DESCRIPTION:November 2\, 2024\, at the Rising Sun Inn located at 1090 General’s Highway\, Crownsville. Tours will be conducted between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.\, with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults\, $5.00 for children ages 3 –10\, and children under 3 are free. \nThe Rising Sun Inn\, with a history spanning four centuries\, has been home to many generations of families. Learn about the lives of some of those residents and learn about those residents who never left. This family-friendly ghost stories tour is suitable for visitors of all ages. Hear stories collected from first-hand accounts of ghostly encounters; tour areas of the Inn not regularly open to the public\, and top the evening off with some cider and cookies. While this event promises to be family-friendly\, the Inn will be dark with the exception of candlelight. Families with younger children may want to join us during the first hour take advantage of the fading daylight. \nPurchasing tickets in advance is recommended\, but NOT required! While we cannot guarantee entrance for “walk-ins” at the time of arrival\, we can ordinarily acommodate you and your group within 15 minutes of arrival time. SUMMARY:Discovering American Art: Palladio’s Legacy in William Buckland’s Creation
DESCRIPTION:Why did William Buckland look to 16th century Italy for inspiration as he drew up the plans for Hammond-Harwood House? Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the house built in 1774\, we seek to understand more about its creation. Learn about the wonders of Palladian architecture from a scholar of architectural history and about Buckland’s transformation from indentured carpenter to architect from a scholar of his work. \nTwo lectures followed by a reception. \nProgram \n1:30- 2:30 Dr. Johanna Heinrichs- Johanna D. Heinrichs joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky School of Architecture in 2017. Her research focuses on villa culture\, domestic architecture\, and issues of urbanism and landscape in 16th-century Venice and the Veneto. Her book\, Villa and Palace in the Venetian Renaissance\, is published by Cambridge University Press. \nBefore she came to the College of Design\, Heinrichs was a visiting lecturer in art history at Williams College. She has also taught at Dominican University\, Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University. Heinrichs earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2013\, a Masters of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge in 2004 and a bachelor’s from Williams College. \n2:45-3:45 Dr. Kate Steir– Senior Curator and Head of Collections\, Gunston Hall. Each program is designed for little ones\, 3-7 years\, with a book reading\, song\, craft/art project\, and exploring in the Paca Garden. \nThis Week’s Book: Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson \nVroom-Vroom\, the witch is on a broom! The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat\, then her bow\, and then her wand!  Luckily\, three helpful animals find the missing items\, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes\, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon? Hear the remarkable story of Mathias de Sousa. One of the original settlers to arrive aboard the Arc and the Dove in the 1600s\, he rose from indentured servitude to become a member of the Maryland General Assembly. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of the Rising Sun Inn on October 19\, 2024\, at 1:00PM for a Tavern Talk and Tea as we mark the 250th Anniversary of the Burning of the Peggy Stewart\, Annapolis’s own Revolutionary War Tea Party! Enjoy an Afternoon Tea with local volunteer\, Don Bailey\, as the Friends celebrate this very special 250th anniversary commemorating the Maryland Colonies march to the Revolution. \nThe colonists were fighting against taxes being levied on them by King George III. In protest\, rebels in Boston had disguised themselves\, boarded a ship arriving from England\, and dumped its cargo of tea into the water. When the Peggy Stewart arrived from England\, the Rebels in Annapolis also refused to pay the tax. In similar fashion\, on October 19\, 1774\, they burned the ship and its cargo to the water level. Here their story and Maryland’s march to Revolution. \nTickets are $48.00 per person and include an Afternoon Tea (sandwiches\, sweets\, and tea)\, with of course an American Tea\, and presentation by local volunteer\, Don Bailey. \n$53.07 per person \n

DESCRIPTION:In October of 1774\, the people of Annapolis discovered that the brigantine\, the Peggy Stewart\, contained contraband tea that violated the colonists’ non-importation resolution.  In response to public outrage\, ship owner Anthony Stewart was forced to burn the Peggy Stewart with the tea onboard down to the waterline with sails and colors still flying! The burning of Peggy Stewart heightened the divide between American patriots from those loyal to the crown – as the colonies continued to march toward revolution! \n  \nVisit with the colonial townspeople of Annapolis on Pinkney Street for our largest living history event of the year! Stop in at the Waterfront Warehouse\, the Shiplap House and Hogshead and encounter local sailors\, merchants and business owners and discover what they thought of this historic event.
