DESCRIPTION:August Virtual Lunch and Learn – The USS Maryland’s Silver Service: History Captured in Repoussé \nIn 1906 famed Baltimore firm Samuel Kirk and Son created a monumental silver service to be used onboard the newly commissioned USS Maryland (ACR-8). Not only would the service be composed of 48 pieces\, but each piece would be unique in representing the history and natural resources of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City through 167 scenes. This lecture will focus on the creation of the silver service and the powerful stories behind many of the scenes. \nRobin Gower is the Curator for the Maryland Commission on Artistic Property of the Maryland State Archives. She holds a BA in Anthropology and Archaeology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an MA in Museum Studies from Indiana University-Indianapolis. During her summers in high school\, Gower volunteered at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History which ignited her passion for caring for museum collections. Prior to the Commission\, she worked for Historic Annapolis\, the Baltimore Museum of Industry\, and the National Park Service. When not at work\, you can find her traveling or spending time outdoors with her husband Chris and their pup Casper. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Anchors Aweigh Music Tour gives you the opportunity to learn all about the U.S. Naval Academy’s rich musical history from Retired Master Chief Dave Hanner. This is the perfect tour for any USNA history buff\, music lover\, or anyone in between! The tour unveils the history behind USNA’s beloved “Anchors Aweigh” song\, as well as the fascinating and often unknown history of Charles Zimmerman. This summer only\, you will have the option to attend a free summer recital at the Zimmerman Bandstand with talented Navy musicians. \nTours are approximately 90 minutes long\, beginning at the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center Theater and ending with a musical-themed walking tour at the Main Chapel. After the tour is completed\, you will have the opportunity to take in a free summer recital from the U.S. Naval Academy Band beginning at 11:00 am in the Zimmerman Bandstand\, or in the Chapel depending on weather conditions. \nAdvanced reservations are encouraged\, but not required. Each program is designed for little ones\, 3-7 years\, with a book reading\, song\, and craft/art project\, plus time to explore the Paca Garden following the story hour. \nThis Week’s Book: Rosa’s Sunflower Experiment by Jessica Spanyol \nRosa’s group of friends want to learn all about growing their own sunflowers! The industrious team of children fill pots with soil\, tenderly plant seeds and then carefully label and position their plants. As they go along\, they research and discuss the process – how seeds germinate\, what they need to thrive and how they will benefit the insect community. Eventually their efforts pay off and they can admire their row of glorious golden sunflowers. DESCRIPTION:A Look Back at Camp Patuxent\, Odenton’s Summer Camp for African American Children\n\n\nSummer camps near the water help to define Anne Arundel County’s recreational heritage\, but in the early 20th century\, racial segregation often shaped camp identities and childhood experiences. On Sunday\, August 4\, the Odenton Heritage Society will open a display about Camp Patuxent\, a Salvation Army camp on the Little Patuxent River that welcomed African American children from Washington in the 1940s while white children attended a summer camp in Virginia. Camp Patuxent occupied the Salvation Army’s former Happyland fresh air camp\, where groups of predominantly white inner-city children had enjoyed rustic quarters and recreational opportunities for two decades before the move to Prince William County. Admission to the OHS Historical Center\, which includes a community and railroad history museum\, is free. The Center is located at 1367 Odenton Road\, and it will be open from 1 pm to 4 pm.
