Learn about current preservation and documentation projects at the Cemetery today and how you can get involved!  \nThe proceeds from this tour will be donated to Brewer Hill Cemetery.  \nPlease wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather\, as the tour is held rain or shine. SUMMARY:Discovering American Art: Silver in the Golden Age of Annapolis
DESCRIPTION:This year the annual Discovering American Art lecture series focuses on silver and the artisans who produced elegant but useful pieces in early Annapolis. \nAnnapolis was a thriving colony in the mid-18th century. Though the American colonists grew to resent the British\, they desired the amenities of the British lifestyle. The designs of decorative pieces\, furniture\, ceramics\, and silver that flourished during the “Golden Age” of Annapolis (1760s-1770s)\, were modelled on examples of earlier periods. Annapolis could claim 28 silversmiths who were accounted for in the years between 1720 and 1850\, but the evidence of their work is rare. The work of only 14 silversmiths survives today. \nTwo scholars of early Maryland life and artistry will speak; their lectures expand our understanding and appreciation for the exhibition Silver in the Golden Age of Annapolis currently on view at Hammond-Harwood House. The exhibition highlights over 80 silver objects\, as well as portraits\, manuscripts\, shop drawings\, and manuscripts of 14 silversmiths: James\, Sr. and John Chalmers\, William and Charles Faris\, Cesar Ghiselin\, Jeremiah Hughes\, John Inch\, Peter Kirkwood\, William McParlin\, Samuel Soumaien\, Thomas Sparrow\, Charles Tinges\, Philip Syng\, and William Whetcroft. This is the first time Annapolis silversmith have been exhibited in Annapolis. Lending institutions include the Baltimore Museum of Art\, Carlyle House\, Historic Annapolis\, Inc.\, Maryland State Archives\, Maryland Center for History and Culture\, Winterthur Museum\, Garden and Library and many private collectors. \nAn exhibition catalogue is available for purchase. \nPrice: $55 | Members: $50

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 2\, the Odenton Heritage Society will inaugurate a recurring costumed docent tour based on the WB&A Electric Railroad\, which ran through Odenton from 1908 to 1935. Before the construction of US 50 and I-97\, electric trains carried people between Washington\, Baltimore\, and Annapolis.  \n \nA docent in full WB&A conductor’s uniform will explain train operations\, routes\, train cars\, and conductors of the past.  During the tour\, visitors can explore the rich history of the town of Odenton\, from its railroads\, homes\, and churches to its schools\, stores\, and recreational activities over the past 154 years. We offer an extensive and enjoyable enrichment program starting mid-January through March (meeting in the morning a couple days a week). Watermark Colonials are a very special group of people\, many of whom have been sharing their love of Annapolis and its history with visitors for years. Our guides also share a special bond with each other; they enjoy the social aspects of the job such as enrichment classes and trips on the “land side” of our company. Watermark also has a large vessel fleet on the “water side” of the company which allows all of Watermark’s employees to enjoy the beauty of the Bay. A few of our Colonials also work on the boats as guides for tours such as the Bay Lighthouses while others work as crew\, ticket sellers\, and bartenders.

DESCRIPTION:Lunch & Learn: Father Eugene Patrick O’Grady: A Baltimore Clergyman in World War II \nMilitary historian Joseph Balkoski tells the story of Eugene Patrick O’Grady\, who accompanied Mary’s soldiers as a chaplain throughout World War II. O’Grady was born in 1909 in West Baltimore\, one of six children of Irish immigrants\, and ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1935. When Maryland’s National Guard\, as part of the 29th Division was mobilized in February 1941\, the division had no chaplains\, so O’Grady volunteered for this duty. He remained with the division throughout its stateside training\, its overseas movement to Britain\, and landed with Maryland’s 115th Infantry Regiment on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a constant presence in the frontlines\, and as one 29er noted\, “he always beamed hope into our tormented souls.” This is the story of Eugene Patrick O’Grady and his remarkable dedication to the welfare of all 29th Division soldiers. \nJoseph Balkoski served for many years as Command Historian of the Maryland National Guard and the US Army’s 29th Infantry Division. He is the author of eight widely acclaimed books on World War II history\, including a two-volume series on American involvement in the D-Day invasion (Omaha Beach and Utah Beach) and a five-volume series\, From Normandy to Victory\, on the history of the 29th Infantry Division in World War II. \nBalkoski was the founder and curator of the Maryland Museum of Military History at Maryland National Guard headquarters in Baltimore\, which includes the 29th Infantry Division Archives\, one of the finest collections of archival papers in the United States related to the service of a US Army division in wartime. He served on the Governor of Maryland’s Commission on Military Monuments\, and was recently awarded the Maryland Distinguished Service Cross and Maryland National Guard Meritorious Service Medal for his lifetime of service to veterans\, the state of Maryland\, and the Army National Guard. In 2023\, he was awarded the Order of St. Maurice\, which is issued by the US Army Chief of Infantry for a lifetime of service to US Army infantrymen.

In 1884\, a group of Black men purchased the 4.5-acre parcel to create a communal cemetery for the Black community\, naming it The People’s Brewer Hill Cemetery Corporation. The cemetery serves as the final resting place for over 7\,000 people — the majority of whom were African American —  including prominent figures\, veterans\, and victims of the 1900s smallpox epidemic\, and continues to be a significant site for preserving African American history and culture in Annapolis.
