SUMMARY:Annearrundell County Free School Museum Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Annearrundell County Free School was established in 1723. It is perhaps the oldest remaining one-room schoolhouse in Maryland. Guests of all ages visiting the Free School Museum can experience educational practices from the 1700’s\, when books and paper were scarce\, and educational practices from the 1800’s\, when Reading\, Writing\, and Arithmetic were the basics of the curriculum. The Free School Museum has several displays\, including artifacts found on the property\, a collection of textbooks used over 150 years ago\, and toys that children might have played with in colonial times. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. \nAt 2:00 pm there will be a slide demonstration on the renovation process. \n

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of National Preservation Month\, we invite you to an inspiring virtual discussion as we honor the remarkable story of Charity Folks\, a formerly enslaved woman who self-emancipated and owned property in Annapolis\, MD–some of which the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum stands on today. \nJoin us for a conversation featuring author\, historian\, and professor Dr. Jessica Millward\, guided by Annapolis historian Janice Hayes-Williams\, as they shed light on Folks’ significant contributions and highlight the importance of preserving sacred spaces. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with individuals who are committed to safeguarding vital cultural landmarks and ensuring their stories endure. \nDr. Jessica Millward is a media savvy historian and podcast host who specializes in bringing a historical perspective to modern times.  An Associate Professor in the Department of History and Core Faculty member of African American Studies at UC Irvine\, Dr. Millward’s first book\, Finding Charity’s Folk: Enslaved and Free Black women in Maryland was published as part of the Race in the Atlantic World series\, Athens: University of Georgia Press (2015).
