DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the production of Dreams of My Soul\, 6pm June 26 & 27 \nOur Local Legacy\, LLC and the Annapolis 250th Commission\, in partnership with St. John’s College\, present Dreams of My Soul\, a period reenactment of a moment in Annapolis history during the American Revolution. \nAbout the production \nThe story takes place on February 1776 in the home of Charles Carroll at Duke of Gloucester Street and there are great tensions in the City of Annapolis\, for everyone. The City of Annapolis is quite busy\, with Maryland Legislators from all over the State and their enslaved and indentured servants. \n \nThe house is in being turned upside down at servants are packing up to return to the plantation as the British are making their way down the Bay. Mr. Carroll is out at meeting in a local tavern\, and his cohorts are concerned about the colonies and the separation from the Brits. The enslaved are concerned\, fearful and hopeful being enticed by Lord Dunmore. Will they continue to live a life in bondage? Is there a way to run? SUMMARY:Final Talk! Towards a More Perfect Union: A Series on the U.S. Constitution - The Bill of Rights
DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to a continuing series of talks hosted by SERC archaeologist Jim Gibb\, examining our country’s often bumpy road towards freedom and self-determination. This 9-part series will explore the evolution of the U.S. Constitution\, in a sequel to the “Road To Independence”- series from spring 2025. The series will highlight the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation\, the refinement of such ideas as the sovereignty of the people and the development of our nation’s “owners’ manual\,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the U.S. Constitution’s constraints on government. \n\nSome of the leading proponents of the U.S. Constitution refused\, in the end\, to sign it. One major impediment: no enumeration of rights. Commitment to amending the Constitution with a Bill of Rights ultimately led to its ratification. However\, each of the first ten amendments in the Bill of Rights was brief and\, in many respects\, vague. Where did the concept of a bill or list or rights originate? Whose rights? How do we interpret those rights? In the final talk of the series\, discover the origin story of ten major rights whose interpretation is still hotly debated today. \n

DESCRIPTION:The mission of the Annapolis Juneteenth Celebration is to commemorate the emancipation of the last enslaved Africans in the United States. On June 19\, 1865\, Union troops arrived to Galveston\, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued over two years prior\, the news was withheld from many enslaved Africans. Today\, we celebrate the freedom and continued legacy of resistance\, empowerment\, and community building. \n​ \nThis year’s theme is “160 Years – A Legacy of Resistance”. Our focus this year is the 160 Year struggle that has proven the resilience of people of color despite the many obstacles and barriers to impede our progress. SUMMARY:Guided Docent Tours of the Woodlawn History Center Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:Join SERC for a guided tour of the exhibits in the Woodlawn History Center\, as we celebrate the 250th! \nWoodlawn is the oldest building in the Smithsonian and one of its owners had a Revolutionary War connection! General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits\, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history\, right here in Edgewater\, Maryland. \nThe story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard. \nBefore or after your tour\, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail\, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling)\, visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center\, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm!  **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arrundell County Historical Society has generously agreed to allow FHD Forensics to hold a small gathering at Benson-Hammond House to announce the identity of a young AAC boy killed in the Revolutionary War in 1780.\nAfter enlisting at the young age of 13-15\, our young hero spent 3 years in the Northern Theater before dying in one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolution at Camden\, South Carolina. His remains were rescued from erosion and relic hunting in 2022\, along with those of 13 other men. He was given a full military funeral and reburial yet his headstone has remained “Unknown.”\nFHD Forensics has recently uncovered his identity using a tiny sample of his DNA and will introduce him to his closest relatives in the shadow of his boyhood home on June 18. He is unknown no more.

DESCRIPTION:Long before the Stonewall Uprising\, and far beyond New York and California\, queer people have lived\, loved\, and shaped American history. From the nation’s earliest days\, LGBTQ+ individuals have been part of Maryland’s story\, even when their lives were pushed into the shadows. This guided walking tour explores over three hundred years of LGBTQ+ history\, pairing familiar landmarks with often-overlooked stories: from a Revolutionary War general to an African American schoolteacher. Join historian Dr. Chris Mielke as we honor those who challenged norms\, built community\, and were brave enough to be themselves. \nThe tour will begin at The People’s Park at 44 Calvert Street and end at the Museum of Historic Annapolis at 99 Main Street. At the conclusion of the tour\, a small reception will be held at the Museum\, featuring light refreshments and an opportunity to continue the conversation. \nThis program is sponsored by our friends at Annapolis Pride\, celebrating\, advocating\, & empowering the LGBTQ+ community in Annapolis and its surrounding areas. DESCRIPTION:6:00-6:45 \nButtons\, Buckles\, and Bayonets: What People Wore to the American Revolution. \nSara Rivers Cofield will share her extensive knowledge about the everyday clothing and accessories of American men and women c 1770-1790\, with emphasis on the durable hardware that survives in the archaeological record.  \nShe will bring along some of the rarely viewed artifacts from the collections held at the Maryland Archaeological conservation laboratory\, such as buttons\, buckles\, and wearable weapons that you can look at up close and personal (No Touching Though!) She will also share some of her 18th century garments from her private costume collection. \nSpeaker Bio: Sara Rivers Cofield is an archaeological curator who has been collecting antique clothing since the 1990s. Since becoming the Curator of Federal Collections at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory in 2004\, she has developed a niche expertise in archaeological “small finds\,” especially metals such as equestrian artifacts and personal adornment hardware. The historic garments she collects as a hobby help her teach other archaeologists how to put artifacts such as buttons\, buckles\, parasol parts\, purse frames\, and crinoline wires in the context of the fashion history they represent. \nJoin the speakers from 6:45 to 7:30 to see first hand some of the compelling  and authentic 18th century artifacts from the State’s collection \nRevolutionary Spirits: Colonial Chesapeake Taverns \nRod Cofield\, Executive Director of Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum\, will share stories about colonial Chesapeake taverns. Hear stories of drunken brawls\, see artifacts from colonial taverns\, and learn of connections to the American Revolution. Cofield will also provide an overview of how Jefferson Patterson helps promote historic preservation and local heritage Statewide.  (Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum connects people to the past through history and archaeology and supports the preservation of Maryland’s cultural and natural resources. ) \nSpeaker Biography – Rod Cofield is the Executive Director at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. Rod was previously the executive director at Historic London Town and Gardens. He spent the first few years of his museum career at Historic St. Mary’s City. During his time in the museum world\, Rod has had the pleasure of researching and interpreting such topics as colonial hearth cooking\, square-rigged ships\, early printing in Maryland\, and taverns. Rod is a native Marylander always happy to learn about the history of the Chesapeake region.
