DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday\, join us for Decolonize Your Dream!\, an inspirational performance and workshop featuring anti-disciplinary artist\, curator\, and DJ\, Muse Dodd. A native of Severn\, MD\, Muse’s work explores the profound questions: “How do you remember\, and what do you choose to forget?” With a focus on channeling trauma\, Muse transforms both personal and collective pain into powerful expressions of movement\, ritual\, and collective dreaming. \nArtist Muse Dodd (they/them) will lead the audience through their artistic practice as an anti-disciplinary artist who works in moving image\, performance\, and sound. The program will include a live performance and sound bath by the artist under their MUSE(O)FIRE moniker\, as well as an artist talk and Q&A followed by a hands-on workshop where participants will be invited to create a collectively sourced video collage. Participants will be asked to share a piece of media\, be it a short video clip\, image or sound that will explore our co-created collective dream for a more just and embodied present and future. \nThis program promises to be a deeply moving exploration of memory\, identity\, and the healing potential of art. DESCRIPTION:From the first day Camp Meade opened in 1917 to the last day of World War I\, draftees from the Baltimore area—and the rest of Maryland—played a crucial and controversial role in bringing the Great War to an end. Hear the incredible story of the 313th Regiment of the 79th Division as never before\, told through the first-hand accounts of the doughboys who went over the top and charged into merciless enemy fire and accomplished what their French ally insisted was simply impossible to achieve. \nTime after time the French stormed the German-held heights of Montfaucon over the preceding three years. Time after time they failed miserably. The 313th—affectionately dubbed “Baltimore’s Own” by its adoring cigar-chomping colonel—did so in less than two days. But the cost was high and controversy over its battlefield success has followed the regiment for more than a hundred years. Author Mike Martin spent more than a decade meticulously researching and writing this epic story and brings it to life through the penned words these soldiers recorded themselves in tattered diaries\, memoirs\, and wartime letters from “over there.” \n  \nMike Martin is a retired long-time Baltimore County high school teacher who was the coordinator of Lansdowne High School’s Academy of Finance program. Affiliated with the National Academy Foundation\, Lansdowne was one of only a few Maryland public high schools\, and 200 secondary schools in the nation to offer the five-course program in personal finance. Before joining the teaching ranks at age 50\, Martin worked in the private sector. Prior to that he was a journalist\, working as an editor for the local weekly paper in his hometown Catonsville community. He also spent time as a reporter for both the Baltimore Sun and News American daily papers. It was his passion for writing\, and history that prompted him to write his recently published book\, Baltimore’s Own: Courage\, controversy and the crucial role of the 313th Regiment to end World War I (2024).

SUMMARY:Odenton Heritage Society Open House
DESCRIPTION:An 18th century “lost mansion” on a plantation that later became the U. S. Naval Academy Dairy in Gambrills will be the focus of a display at the Odenton Heritage Society during its open house on Sunday\, January 5.  The prominent Hammond family of Annapolis completed the mansion by about 1730.  Generations of descendants\, including Matthias Hammond\, owner of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis\, resided at the plantation\, as did an undetermined number of enslaved workers.  In 1876\, Baltimore businessman George Kirby remodeled the mansion in the Italianate style and made it his summer retreat\, underscoring the end of colonial and antebellum ways of life and the decline of the Hammonds’ wealth and influence.  The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the mid-1970s\, only to be destroyed by fire in 1978.  Admission to the OHS Historical Center\, which includes a community and railroad history museum\, is free.  The Center is located at 1367 Odenton Road\, and it will be open from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Celebrate Annapolis Green’s Legacy \nSince the first Green Drinks at the Rockfish (now Blackwall Hitch) in 2006\, Annapolis Green has hosted almost 160 of these gatherings bringing the community together face-to-face\, and nothing beats that in-person connection! Their goal was always to support local businesses that were on the path to sustainability. The venues included restaurants\, a museum\, marinas\, yacht clubs\, a winery\, theaters\, and more. \nThe Graduate Hotel by Hilton (formerly Loews) also has been one of their favorite downtown locations through the years so it’s fitting that they’ll be saying “Goodbye Green Drinkers” on December 18 instead of our customary opening\, “Hello\, Green Drinkers!” Join them from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m

So they wake Bear up and have him help them find a Christmas tree\, bake cakes\, hang up stockings\, and sing Christmas songs. Soon his friends fall asleep\, but Bear stays up. He’s so busy with his work that he misses the appearance of Santa\, who pauses at the cave door to fill all their stockings. In Bear Stays Up for Christmas\, we discover that giving is one of the best Christmas presents of all. Join us as we sing and dance in anticipation of the holidays! SUMMARY:Lafayette in Annapolis- 200 Years Ago
DESCRIPTION:When Lafayette arrived in Annapolis in 1781\, The Atlantic Monthly quoted Mrs. Margaret Ogle\, “The divine Marquis de la Fayette is in town\, and is quite the thing.” Lafayette made several trips to Annapolis\, but his last visit in 1824 was part of an extensive tour from New Hampshire to Louisiana. As would be expected\, Lafayette’s visit was filled with military reviews\, balls\, and other festivities. \nOn December 17\, 1824\, Lafayette entered the State House to much pomp and circumstance. A semi-circle of girls dressed in white and holding banners that said “Lafayette- The friend of our fathers\, will always be welcome to the hearts of their children” greeted him to the rotunda and escorted him into the Old Senate Chamber. \nThe Hammond-Harwood House is proud to have in its collection a ribbon likely worn by Judge Jeremiah Townley Chase\, who was on the Annapolis welcoming committee for Lafayette’s visit. Judge Chase was owner of Hammond-Harwood House\, which he purchased for his daughter\, Frances Loockerman\, and her family. \nThe ribbon and a commemorative Lafayette bowl of the period will be on view in the Hammond-Harwood House Introductory Gallery\, which is free and open to the public December 13-15 as Annapolis celebrates the 200th anniversary of his visit. \nOn December 14 at 3 p.m.\, Hammond-Harwood House will offer a special Lafayette tour focused on the Annapolis of 200 years ago and featuring additional objects related to Lafayette’s visit – a miniature portrait of Lafayette\, a French Dubuc ormolu clock commissioned by the Marquis in honor of Washington\, and portraits of prominent Annapolitans of 1824. \nPrice: $15 | Members: $10
