SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture – Music of the “Ancient and Honorable Tuesday Club of Annapolis” (1745-1756)
DESCRIPTION:Annapolis wasn’t necessarily the most exciting place culturally in the middle of the 18th century\, so a group of mostly Scottish immigrants decided to make things happen.  They formed a gentlemen’s club\, held bi-monthly meetings for over ten years\, and left us with a rich and often comical account of their goings-on.  Music (and also rum punch\, of course) was central to these gatherings at private homes and taverns such as Middleton’s\, and the ministers\, merchants\, doctors and other club members and guests often composed their own for their gatherings.  Join Dr. David Hildebrand as he discusses\, sings\, plays and cues up images and recordings of Tuesday Club music — you’ll marvel at the silliness that survives down the centuries (and you may also learn \n David Hildebrand\na bit about what was heard in town at this time at the dancing rooms\, theater\, out in the tobacco fields\, and at St. Anne’s Church)!

Behind the Keyboard: Jane Austen’s Musical World is an immersive concert experience featuring selections from the Austen Family Music Collection\, performed on a newly restored Broadwood fortepiano—an instrument identical to the one Austen herself played in her home at Chawton\, making its public debut after decades of silence. \nIn celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday\, Hammond-Harwood House is hosting a concert that will feature a rare 1806 fortepiano built by John Broadwood and Sons\, the maker to His Majesty King George III and his 6 princesses. The 5 1/2 octave wing-shaped instrument has not been played since the 1990s and has been restored through the generosity of Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area and the Maryland Historical Trust.\nPresented by Empressa Ensemble and hosted in the 18th-century ballroom of the Hammond-Harwood House Museum\, one of America’s finest examples of Georgian architecture\, this concert offers a rare and resonant encounter with Austen’s era. SUMMARY:Annearrundell County Free School Museum Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Annearrundell County Free School was established in 1723. It is perhaps the oldest remaining one-room schoolhouse in Maryland. Guests of all ages visiting the Free School Museum can experience educational practices from the 1700’s\, when books and paper were scarce\, and educational practices from the 1800’s\, when Reading\, Writing\, and Arithmetic were the basics of the curriculum. The Free School Museum has several displays\, including artifacts found on the property\, a collection of textbooks used over 150 years ago\, and toys that children might have played with in colonial times. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. \nAt 2:00 pm there will be a slide demonstration on the renovation process. \n
