SUMMARY:Maryland Preservation Awards: Faye Allen Belt for the Crownsville Hospital Master Plan & Columbia Beach National Register Nomination
DESCRIPTION:This award for Excellence in Community Impact will be presented to Faye Allen Belt for her work on the Crownsville Hospital Master Plan & Columbia Beach National Register Nomination. \nFaye Allen Belt is a distinguished leader in the preservation of Maryland’s African American heritage. Drawing on deep personal ties to Crownsville Hospital\, Belt galvanized former staff and descendants to help shape the Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park Master Plan\, adopted by Anne Arundel County in 2025. Simultaneously\, as President of the Columbia Beach Citizens Improvement Association\, her grassroots outreach and oral history documentation were instrumental in Columbia Beach’s official listing as a National Register Historic District by the National Park Service. Belt’s advocacy ensures that these essential places\, and their stories\, remain central to the state’s historical record – and its future. \n\nDate and time: May 15th\, 2026 1:00 pm\nVirtual: Watch the livestream on May 15!

SUMMARY:Painting the Hammond-Harwood House Spring Garden in Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Jean Brinton Jaecks will inspire students to paint the spring garden at the beautiful Hammond Harwood House. The garden surrounds the famous home\, with large boxwoods from the early 18 century\, urns filled with an abundance of flowers\, a dogwood tree and the enclosed brick wall with stunning views of the Naval Academy Chapel. Jean will give a Plein air watercolor demonstration and guidance throughout the afternoon in expressing light and atmosphere in watercolor. A critique will complete the day.\nJean Brinton Jaecks is a visual artist working in watercolor\, oil\, and egg tempera on vellum with gold and silver leaf. After Jean’s BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art\, she was honored with MICA’s Alfred and Trafford Klots International Artist Residency in Brittany. Her MFA thesis at George Washington University\, “A Garden Near and Far\,” celebrated her garden. Jean taught twenty years at the U.S. Botanic Garden in partnership with the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington\, D.C.; at St. John’s College in Annapolis; at the National Arboretum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.\n\nPlease bring your own painting materials to the event.
