SUMMARY:The Archaeology of Jug Bay: A Hike through History
DESCRIPTION:April has been declared Archaeology Month in Maryland. Archaeology is the scientific study of past human life and culture by the recovery and examination of remaining material evidence. Join archaeologist Drew Webster\, from the Anne Arundel County’s Cultural Resources Section\, to celebrate Archaeology Month with a hike from the Jug Bay Visitor’s Center to the Jug Bay River Farm. Along the hike (approximately 2.5-3 miles) you will learn about the many archaeological findings and research sites ranging in occupations from 13\,000 years ago to the historic period. Drew will share how these archaeological sites inform us about past ways of life for people occupying the landscape of Jug Bay. The hike will include an artifact show-and-tell. Ages: 12 years old and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $10 per person\, entrance fee included. No refunds for participant cancellations. Registration required at https://apm.activecommunities.com/aarecparks/Home Activity Net #44366. For questions call 410-222-8006 or email jugbay@aacounty.org.

SUMMARY:Poetry Month Challenge - Program
DESCRIPTION:Jefferson Holland\, Poet Laureate of Annapolis\, invites poets of all ages and levels of experience to participate in a challenge in honor of National Poetry Month. Poets will be invited to read their original work in a program on Friday\, April 24\, 2026\, at St. Luke’s Church in Eastport from 6 – 8 p.m. \n“Our last program on Maryland Day was a huge success\,” Jeff reports. “We heard 22 poets\, each reading their original takes on local history and heritage\, and we had nearly 100 poetry enthusiasts in the audience. It’s inspiring how the interest in writing poetry and attending live readings is growing in Annapolis. It’s positively magical.” \nFor National Poetry Month\, Jefferson challenges poets of all ages and levels of experience to write a short poem on this topic: “I was there…!” Write a poem from the first-person perspective of something that happened in Annapolis at any time in history\, from the pre-colonial era to present day – or even in the future. \n“Poems can be composed in any category of poetic structure\,” Jeff advises. “Choose a character to interpret – an historical figure or an ordinary citizen\, or even yourself. Tell a story from that individual’s point of view.” \nPoets must submit their intent to participate in the challenge by emailing annapolispoetlaureate@gmail.com no later than 5 p.m. on Friday\, April 10. The first 20 poets to respond will be invited to read at the program. \nFinished poems must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Monday\, April 20. Poems must fit onto one page\, in 12-point type\, so there will be time for the 20 poets to read their work. \nProgram date: Friday\, April 24\, 6 – 8 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church\, 1101 Bay Ridge Avenue\, Annapolis\, MD 21403. Admission is free\, bring all your friends and relatives! \nFor more information\, contact Jefferson Holland at annapolispoetlaureate@gmail.com \nThe Annapolis Art in Public Places Commission (AIPPC) selected Jefferson Holland as Poet Laureate for the City of Annapolis\, an honorary position whose role is to promote the literary arts and literacy within the Annapolis community.

SUMMARY:"Paint Like a Butterfly" with Jean Brinton-Jaecks
DESCRIPTION:Join artist and gardener Jean Brinton-Jaecks for a talk about her painted memoir and journal chronicling her pollinator garden\, Paint Like a Butterfly. Inspired by her parent’s dedication to sustainable organic gardening\, J.I. Rodale’s revolutionary gardening vision and local author Rachel Carson\, Jean’s pollinator garden is a sustainable native oasis for butterflies\, bees\, and a myriad of insects and wildlife. Her garden is certified by the National Wildlife Federation and is part of the Pollinator Pathways\, a movement dedicated to native organic practices to maintain a safe and flourishing environment for all creatures. Paint Like a Butterfly was inspired by the experience of witnessing the 1990 butterfly migration in Cape May\, New Jersey\, and later the overwintering monarchs in Pacific Grove\, California. \nPaint Like a Butterfly: An Artist’s Pollinator Garden will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Music from Maryland Traditions and Annapolis’ Tuesday Club Concert
DESCRIPTION:Local celebrities in Irish music–Peter Brice on button accordion\, Tess Hartis on fiddle\, and guest pianist Donna Long– are featured in a concert of 18th and 19th century music from Maryland and Ireland. The concert will highlight minuets from the manuscript of Annapolis dancing master John Ormsby who taught dancing here in the 1750s. Also featured is music from Annapolis’ Tuesday Club\, a colonial gentlemen’s club. Though dance had always been a popular form of entertainment in America and Europe\, dance masters like Ormsby heightened the trend through private and public instruction.  This evening’s program is inspired by the research of former United States Naval Academy musician John Barry Tally who wrote Secular Music in Colonial Annapolis: The Tuesday Club 1745-56. \nPeter and Tess perform regularly as “The Livebox\,” and focus on the revival of traditional music from Maryland\, restoring its links to ancient traditions in Ireland and Scotland\, while identifying and demonstrating the mutations in popular American music movements
