General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits\, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history\, right here in Edgewater\, Maryland. \nThe story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard. \nBefore or after your tour\, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail\, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling)\, visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center\, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm!  **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.

DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Anne Arundel County Executive’s Office will host four River Days festivals at different waterfront locations throughout the county. \n“The goal of these events is to provide public water access and inspire our residents to become stewards who will protect the health of our local waterways\,” said County Executive Pittman. “River Days provide families an opportunity to get out on the water and fall in love with the place that they live.” \nRiver Days Festivals are hosted by the County Executive’s Office. All events are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:On July 8\, 1776\, Colonel John Nixon delivered the first public reading of the Declaration in the State House Yard—now Independence Square—in Philadelphia. For many colonists\, it was the first time they heard the revolutionary promises of equality\, unalienable rights\, and self-governance that would become the foundation of a new nation. DESCRIPTION:Join Us for July Jubilation! \nOn Sunday\, July 5 from 1PM-4PM\, the Odenton Heritage Society invites you to July Jubilation as we celebrate America’s 250th and Odenton’s connections to the 18th century. \nVisit the OHS Historical Center to enjoy festive red\, white\, and blue ice cream. See historical objects and displays such as iron products made at a pre–Revolutionary War ironworks\, an inscribed boundary stone marking an estate owned by a prominent Annapolis family and learn about a ca. 1792 Quaker meeting house that later formed the nucleus of a nearby African American community. Also on display will be a collection of Watts family picker’s checks\, coin-like tokens used to pay farm laborers to harvest truck crops such as delicious Anne Arundel strawberries. \nA highlight of the day will be a guided bus tour of historic sites in Odenton\, including a special stop at the former USNA Dairy Farm once owned by the prominent Annapolis Hammond family. Through images of relics\, grave markers\, and a now-lost mansion\, visitors can discover the Hammond family’s contributions\, including the Revolutionary War exploits and Gambrills burial place of Matthias Hammond\, owner of the Hammond-Harwood House in Annapolis. \nTour participants will meet inside the Historical Center at 1:30 PM for a brief introduction. The tour will then depart at 2PM and lasts approximately one hour. Please note: the bus is not air-conditioned\, so plan accordingly for warm July weather. \nPlease pre-register by email to odentonheritage@gmail.com with the number of attendees for the bus tour. The City of Annapolis is quite busy\, with Maryland Legislators from all over the State and their enslaved and indentured servants. \n \nThe house is in being turned upside down at servants are packing up to return to the plantation as the British are making their way down the Bay. Mr. Carroll is out at meeting in a local tavern\, and his cohorts are concerned about the colonies and the separation from the Brits. The enslaved are concerned\, fearful and hopeful being enticed by Lord Dunmore. Will they continue to live a life in bondage? Is there a way to run? DESCRIPTION:In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary\, we invite you to a continuing series of talks hosted by SERC archaeologist Jim Gibb\, examining our country’s often bumpy road towards freedom and self-determination. This 9-part series will explore the evolution of the U.S. Constitution\, in a sequel to the “Road To Independence”- series from spring 2025. The series will highlight the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation\, the refinement of such ideas as the sovereignty of the people and the development of our nation’s “owners’ manual\,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the U.S. Constitution’s constraints on government. \n\nSome of the leading proponents of the U.S. Constitution refused\, in the end\, to sign it. One major impediment: no enumeration of rights. Commitment to amending the Constitution with a Bill of Rights ultimately led to its ratification. However\, each of the first ten amendments in the Bill of Rights was brief and\, in many respects\, vague. Where did the concept of a bill or list or rights originate? Whose rights? How do we interpret those rights? In the final talk of the series\, discover the origin story of ten major rights whose interpretation is still hotly debated today. \n
