On the contrary\, throughout the 1700s\, Native Americans exerted decisive influence on the American colonies encroaching all around them. But how\, why\, and at what cost? How did Native people navigate the rapid changes to the balance of power between themselves and the surging numbers of European settlers now living on the American continent? What did life look like in the contact zones where Europeans and Natives interacted? Who were the intermediaries\, the go-betweens\, who greased the wheels of diplomacy and cooperation on the borderlands between English America and Indian Country? Why did they do that work\, and why did so many of those go-betweens end up dead? \nAdvance registration required. Registration closes one half hour prior to lecture.  \nCost: FREE

SUMMARY:Annearrundell County Free School Museum Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Annearrundell County Free School was established in 1723. It is perhaps the oldest remaining one-room schoolhouse in Maryland. Guests of all ages visiting the Free School Museum can experience educational practices from the 1700’s\, when books and paper were scarce\, and educational practices from the 1800’s\, when Reading\, Writing\, and Arithmetic were the basics of the curriculum. The Free School Museum has several displays\, including artifacts found on the property\, a collection of textbooks used over 150 years ago\, and toys that children might have played with in colonial times. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. \n  \n

SUMMARY:150th Anniversary Celebration of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year with a special celebration on August 9\, 2025. The Anniversary Celebration is a call to action because the lighthouse faces an existential threat from sea levels rising. \nSince 2023\, the landing dock has been damaged repeatedly by numerous serious storms and higher than normal tides. Our goal is to raise the lighthouse level to ensure that this historic structure will remain for our grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Steeped in traditional music\, classically educated\, enamored with Bluegrass\, and with an extensive list of influences\, The Folk Villains are ever-evolving and always full of surprises. DESCRIPTION:As the dog days of August approach\, the Odenton Heritage Society will unveil a special display\, Dog Days: Conversations with Odenton Canines\, at our August open house. \nEarly photographs of Odenton residents and their dogs — each identified by name — have been selected from the Society’s rich collections. In this unique display\, the dogs themselves ‘tell’ the story of their daily lives and their owners’ involvement with important aspects of Odenton history\, from railroad work in 1900 to modern highways of the 1930s and local law enforcement by a Justice of the Peace. Meet these pets of the past and enjoy guided tours of the Society’s other displays about Odenton\, the town that railroads built\, led by our costumed Railroad Conductor docent. \nWe welcome visitors during our Open Houses on the first Sunday of each month from 1PM–4PM. As always\, admission and guided tours are free.   While you’re here\, please consider becoming a member — your support helps us continue our all-volunteer missions to preserve and protect the history of Odenton.

SUMMARY:Annearrundell County Free School Museum Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Annearrundell County Free School was established in 1723. It is perhaps the oldest remaining one-room schoolhouse in Maryland. Guests of all ages visiting the Free School Museum can experience educational practices from the 1700’s\, when books and paper were scarce\, and educational practices from the 1800’s\, when Reading\, Writing\, and Arithmetic were the basics of the curriculum. The Free School Museum has several displays\, including artifacts found on the property\, a collection of textbooks used over 150 years ago\, and toys that children might have played with in colonial times. The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. \nAt 2:00 pm a docent will conduct a story time for elementary school-aged children. Guests will be able to take home a children’s book from a present-day collection of books. \n
