DESCRIPTION:Join SERC for a guided tour of the exhibits in the Woodlawn History Center\, as we celebrate the 250th! \nWoodlawn is the oldest building in the Smithsonian and one of its owners had a Revolutionary War connection! General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits\, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history\, right here in Edgewater\, Maryland. \nThe story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard. \nBefore or after your tour\, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail\, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling)\, visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center\, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm!  **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy kayaking on a narrow\, tree lined section of the Patuxent River. The paddle will start and end at Jug Bay’s Wooton’s Landing Wetland Park. This park is mile marker 49 on the Patuxent Water Trail\, which means it is about 49 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. There are no water or toilet facilities available on site. \nThe Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river\, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water. Participants must be able to: \n• Independently participate in all activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe body position. \n• Manage all personal care and personal mobility independently. \n• Effectively communicate with leaders and other participants. For your safety you are required to have plenty of water (at least 32 oz pp)\, sunscreen\, sun hat\, sunglasses\, and closed toe shoes that can get wet and muddy. If you lack any of these items\, we can deny you participation. Bring lunch and/or snacks. If conditions do not allow for paddling\, a hike may be substituted. DESCRIPTION:Join SERC for a guided tour of the exhibits in the Woodlawn History Center\, as we celebrate the 250th! \nWoodlawn is the oldest building in the Smithsonian and one of its owners had a Revolutionary War connection! General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits\, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history\, right here in Edgewater\, Maryland. \nThe story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard. \nBefore or after your tour\, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail\, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling)\, visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center\, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm!  **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.

SUMMARY:Mysteries of the Marsh Kayak - War of 1812 History
DESCRIPTION:Discover the abundant wildlife and plants in the wetlands along the Patuxent River\, while learning about what made this waterway important to British and American forces during the War of 1812. Learn local history from National Park Service staff that most people are unfamiliar with\, including the where the British landed before marching to\, capturing & burning Washington DC.\nTrips are 4 hours long and include: general orientation\, basic paddling\, and launching kayaks. Paddlers can expect to actively paddle for 2.5 to 3 hours. Kayaks\, paddles\, PFD’s (life vests)\, and guides provided.\n\nThe Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river\, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water. Participants must be able to:\n• Independently participate in all activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe body position.\n• Manage all personal care and personal mobility independently.\n• Effectively communicate with leaders and other participants.\n\nFor your safety you are required to have plenty of water (at least 32 oz pp)\, sunscreen\, sun hat\, sunglasses\, closed toe shoes that can get wet and an extra set of dry clothes. If you lack any of these items\, we can deny you participation!\n\nBring a lunch/snack.\nAges 13 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Fee $25 per person. Prompt program start time so please arrive by 9:45 am. If conditions do not allow for paddling\, a hike will be substituted. Registration is required.
