We recently rediscovered a poster-sized scrapbook about George Washington that was made by a sixth grade class sometime in the mid 1970s. This book inspired us to host an event about Mr. Washington and will be on display. George (interpreter Mike Callahan) will be in attendance and we hope people will come to talk with him. We will have books\, pictures\, and portraits of George completed by fifth grade students from Davidsonville Elementary School on display. Cherry treats will be available too.

Created from the 1850s through the 1950s to support fire insurance underwriting\, these detailed maps have become indispensable for tracing changes to buildings and understanding how cities and towns evolved over time.  \nRachel Robinson\, HA’s Vice President of Preservation\, will provide an introduction and lead a hands-on tutorial on using Sanborn maps. This talk highlights the profound contributions of African American material culture in the enduring pursuit of freedom. SUMMARY:Towards a More Perfect Union: The Secret Debates of the Constitutional Convention
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1787\, 55 delegates met in Philadelphia to revise the now-floundering Articles of Confederation. They emerged with a new U.S. Constitution—but the discussions and drafting largely happened behind closed doors. The question of slavery pervaded those discussions\, as did the critical divide between “small state” and “large state” delegates. How did these secret discussions mol \n \nd the Constitution? Who are “We the People\,” with which begins the Preamble to the Constitution? Is the purpose of the Constitution to govern individuals\, to preserve states as the primary governing bodies\, or both? And how do we know what took place in these secret conversations at all? Join archaeologist Jim Gibb for a look at the tumultuous creation of America’s most important document. \nThis event is entirely in person. Attendees 12 years and older are welcome to join. \nAll minors must be accompanied by an adult. Talks are free\, but space is limited\, so advance signup is required! \nIn anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary\, join us at our 1735 Woodlawn History Center for a series of in-person talks exploring our country’s often bumpy road towards freedom and self-determination. In a new 9-part (expanded from six parts!) series\, explore the creation of the U.S. Constitution. This series is a sequel to the “Road To Independence” series from spring 2025. It will highlight the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation\, the refinement of such ideas as the “sovereignty of the people\,” and the development of our nation’s “owners’ manual\,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the U.S. Constitution’s constraints on government. All talks hosted by archaeologist Jim Gibb\, head of the SERC Enviromental Archaeology Lab. Talks will take place the first Saturday of the month at 2pm\, unless otherwise noted. SUMMARY:OHS February 2026 Open House
DESCRIPTION:The Odenton Heritage Society invites the public to an open house on Sunday\, February 1 celebrating Black History Month and showcasing St. John AME Zion Church in Wilsontown. \nLocated south of Odenton\, St. John’s Church—a rural church founded in the 1870s and home to a vibrant congregation today—is more than a place of worship. It became the heart of an African American community shaped by emancipation and the pursuit of freedom. Quakers transferred a former meeting house to African Americans to serve as their church\, fostering interaction between the two groups and the sharing of adjoining cemeteries. The current church building was constructed in 1942 after wartime evacuations made way for the expansion of Fort Meade. \nEnjoy additional exhibits exploring Odenton’s railroads\, homes\, churches\, schools\, and the lives of the people who have shaped the community\, past and present. Visit the OHS Historical Center at 1367 Odenton Road. We are open from 1:00PM to 4:00PM\, with free admission and guided tours led by costumed docents.
