SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture – Lafayette’s Musical Reception: Annapolis\, 1824
DESCRIPTION:At the invitation of Congress and President Monroe\, the Frenchman/American General Lafayette toured America for more than a year\, 1824-25.  A young confidant of General Washington and one of the few surviving heroes of the American Revolution\, the then-aged Frenchman traveled to all 24 of the current states and was greeted by massive public celebrations – dinners\, balls\, military displays\, and more.  Mid-December of 2024 marks 200 years since General Lafayette came to Annapolis.  As chairman of the national music committee with American Friends of Lafayette\, Dr. David Hildebrand has\, for well over a year\, been unearthing\, bringing to life\, and disseminating much of the music composed for and presented to Lafayette when visiting Maryland and beyond.  This lecture will reveal the style and character of this 200-year-old music\, gathered from period music sources\, and it will include both live and recorded musical examples of songs\, marches\, dance tunes\, and more.  \nAdvanc registration required; registration closes one half hour prior to lecture. \nCost: $15 per household for General Admission; $10 per household for HA Members\, Military\, and HA Docents

DESCRIPTION:Odenton’s railroad connections played a pivotal role in moving masses of people to the annual Army-Navy football game\, a 134-year-old tradition that stirs loyalties and rivalries in the Washington-Fort Meade-Annapolis military community. On Sunday\, November 3\, the Odenton Heritage Society will open a display about special trains that carried midshipmen from Annapolis to Odenton\, where they changed railroads to reach game venues near Philadelphia or New York. The display\, which covers the years 1900 to 1975\, also features special trains that carried game fans from Annapolis or Washington\, with a stop at Odenton. Admission to the OHS Historical Center\, which includes a community and railroad history museum\, is free. The Center is located at 1367 Odenton Road. Hours are from 1pm to 4pm.

DESCRIPTION:November 2\, 2024\, at the Rising Sun Inn located at 1090 General’s Highway\, Crownsville. Tours will be conducted between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.\, with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults\, $5.00 for children ages 3 –10\, and children under 3 are free. \nThe Rising Sun Inn\, with a history spanning four centuries\, has been home to many generations of families. Learn about the lives of some of those residents and learn about those residents who never left. This family-friendly ghost stories tour is suitable for visitors of all ages. Hear stories collected from first-hand accounts of ghostly encounters; tour areas of the Inn not regularly open to the public\, and top the evening off with some cider and cookies. While this event promises to be family-friendly\, the Inn will be dark with the exception of candlelight. SUMMARY:Discovering American Art: Palladio’s Legacy in William Buckland’s Creation
DESCRIPTION:Why did William Buckland look to 16th century Italy for inspiration as he drew up the plans for Hammond-Harwood House? Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the house built in 1774\, we seek to understand more about its creation. Learn about the wonders of Palladian architecture from a scholar of architectural history and about Buckland’s transformation from indentured carpenter to architect from a scholar of his work. \nTwo lectures followed by a reception. \nProgram \n1:30- 2:30 Dr. Johanna Heinrichs- Johanna D. Heinrichs joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky School of Architecture in 2017. Her research focuses on villa culture\, domestic architecture\, and issues of urbanism and landscape in 16th-century Venice and the Veneto. Her book\, Villa and Palace in the Venetian Renaissance\, is published by Cambridge University Press. \nBefore she came to the College of Design\, Heinrichs was a visiting lecturer in art history at Williams College. She has also taught at Dominican University\, Northern Illinois University and Northwestern University. Heinrichs earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2013\, a Masters of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge in 2004 and a bachelor’s from Williams College. \n2:45-3:45 Dr. Kate Steir– Senior Curator and Head of Collections\, Gunston Hall. SUMMARY:Candlelight Historic Ghost Stories Tour
DESCRIPTION:November 2\, 2024\, at the Rising Sun Inn located at 1090 General’s Highway\, Crownsville. Tours will be conducted between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.\, with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults\, $5.00 for children ages 3 –10\, and children under 3 are free. \nThe Rising Sun Inn\, with a history spanning four centuries\, has been home to many generations of families. Learn about the lives of some of those residents and learn about those residents who never left. This family-friendly ghost stories tour is suitable for visitors of all ages. Hear stories collected from first-hand accounts of ghostly encounters; tour areas of the Inn not regularly open to the public\, and top the evening off with some cider and cookies. While this event promises to be family-friendly\, the Inn will be dark with the exception of candlelight. Families with younger children may want to join us during the first hour take advantage of the fading daylight. \nPurchasing tickets in advance is recommended\, but NOT required! While we cannot guarantee entrance for “walk-ins” at the time of arrival\, we can ordinarily acommodate you and your group within 15 minutes of arrival time.
