SUMMARY:The Burning of the Stephen Steward Shipyard with Archaeologist Katie Gill.
DESCRIPTION:The Stephen Steward’s Shipyard is one of the only sites of armed conflict with the British in the American Revolution in Anne Arundel County. In 1781 British regulars from two ships anchored along the West River burned the shipyard in the middle of the night. This attempt\, while successful\, did not shut down the shipyard that was constructing\, supplying\, and repairing the vessels that defended Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay during the American Revolution. Learn about the archaeology of this site\, integral to our understanding of this nearly forgotten part of Maryland history.   \nSpeaker Bios: \nKatie Gill is an archaeologist and historic preservationist with a passionate interest in the history of the Chesapeake and beyond. She received her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2020 and her master’s degrees in Anthropology and Historic Preservation in 2024. Katie is the Heritage Program Manager at the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area. This is where she began her work revisiting the Steward’s Shipyard Site.

SUMMARY:Linen and Liberty: Meet Catharine Futier
DESCRIPTION:It’s the spring of 1776 and the American Revolution is underway. British occupation of several colonies\, combined with Congress’s non-importation policy on British goods\, makes essential supplies increasingly scarce for tradespeople. \nCatharine Futier\, a free Black woman who earns her living as a laundress and seamstress\, is among those deeply affected by these restrictions. Step into her shop and journey into the past to discover how everyday people endured hardship\, adapted\, and made sacrifices in support of the revolutionary cause.  \nThis is a drop-in style program. Visitors may join at any time during program hours and explore at their own pace through informal interaction and demonstrations. Advance registration recommended\, but not required. \nCost: Free ($5 suggested donation)

SUMMARY:If These Walls Could Talk: Well- It Turns Out They Can!
DESCRIPTION:Join Sherri Marsh Johns to discover how historians and preservationists “read” historic buildings to uncover stories that written records alone cannot tell. This presentation will explore the minute details of pre-Revolutionary brick architecture of Anne Arundel County\, highlighting buildings such as the Rising Sun Inn\, Tulip Hill\, Larkin’s Hill\, Larkin’s Hundred\, and Sudley. \nBy examining architectural features including brickwork\, floor plans\, chimneys\, construction methods\, decorative details\, and alterations over time\, architectural historians can identify changing patterns of wealth\, craftsmanship\, technology\, and daily life in colonial Maryland. These buildings serve as physical documents\, preserving evidence of how people lived\, worked\, traveled\, and expressed social status in the eighteenth-century Chesapeake. \nDrawing upon documentation from the Maryland Historical Trust Medusa database\, the lecture will demonstrate how architectural history methods reveal new information about Maryland’s colonial past and help reinterpret familiar historic sites. Attendees will gain insight into how seemingly small details can provide clues about construction dates\, cultural influences\, building evolution\, and the broader social history of Anne Arundel County before the American Revolution. \nThis program offers a deeper appreciation for why preserving and studying historic architecture remains essential to understanding Maryland’s early history. \n  \nSpeaker Biography:  \nSherri Marsh Johns is an architectural historian and preservation specialist whose work focuses on early Chesapeake architecture\, material culture\, and historic landscapes. She is the founder of Retrospect Architectural Research and serves as a principal historian for the restoration and interpretation of Cloverfields Preservation Foundation\, one of Maryland’s most significant early eighteenth-century estates. Her research combines archival investigation\, architectural analysis\, and emerging preservation technologies to reinterpret historic buildings and landscapes and uncover new insights into colonial life. Marsh Johns has contributed extensively to scholarship and public interpretation surrounding Cloverfields and other historic Chesapeake sites\, with a particular emphasis on how architectural evidence can illuminate the experiences of both elite households and enslaved communities.

Hear stories of drunken brawls\, see artifacts from colonial taverns\, and learn of connections to the American Revolution. Cofield will also provide an overview of how Jefferson Patterson helps promote historic preservation and local heritage Statewide.  (Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum connects people to the past through history and archaeology and supports the preservation of Maryland’s cultural and natural resources. ) \nSpeaker Biography – Rod Cofield is the Executive Director at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum. Rod was previously the executive director at Historic London Town and Gardens. He spent the first few years of his museum career at Historic St. Mary’s City.
