Portraying multiple real-life historical personalities from our country’s collective past\, Antoine helps audiences feel like they have transited a time tunnel. He has been reenacting for nearly 17 years and is the current President for the 1st Rhode Island Regiment/6th United States Colored Troops\, Vice Commander of Northampton Country Historical Impressions and Vice President of the 3rd United States Colored Troops.

DESCRIPTION:Historic Annapolis is pleased to partner with the New Century American Irish-Arts Company for The Crabtown Frolic\, a two-day traditional music festival featuring intimate performances\, presentations\, repertoire workshops\, social dances\, and music sessions.  \nHistoric Annapolis will host the festival’s culminating performances on Sunday\, September 28 on the picturesque terrace at the William Paca House & Garden. Performers will showcase their talents in traditional music in our 18th century space and explore the symbiosis of historic architecture and music. You’ll experience the aesthetics in which our ancestors entertained themselves using the gifts of their creative genius.    \nThe Crabtown Frolic embraces the ethos of the Gaelic Revival—to cultivate a rich\, intellectual life within Ireland’s music\, language\, sport\, art\, literature\, and history—and extends the same ethos to Chesapeake culture.  It examines Chesapeake’s extant 18th and 19th century traditions with concern for their future and unites tradition bearers to explore the encounters that cradle our Tidewater culture.  \nAll tickets must be purchased through the The Crabtown Frolic website.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture – Major Developments in American Constitutional History
DESCRIPTION:The United States Constitution was ratified in 1789; however\, the document’s meaning has not always been clear. This is because many debates over constitutional interpretation were settled during the Constitutional Convention. Sometimes our nation’s founders did not agree on constitutional meaning. Other ties\, the Constitution’s ambiguity comes from our country facing contemporary issues that the founders never would have imagined. \nIn this series of presentations on American Constitutional History\, Dr. Francene Engel\, Scholar for the Maryland Council for Civics and History Education\, will explore major events in history that shaped the document’s meaning and affected the trajectory of our constitutional democracy. The first program will discuss the development of judicial review through the landmark Supreme Court case of Marbury v. Madison (1803). DESCRIPTION:Spark! Places of Innovation\, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program\, dives into innovation and invention happening in rural America. In small towns across America\, people are creating new products\, taking risks\, meeting challenges together\, and seizing upon exciting opportunities that change local life and sometimes reach far beyond. Spark! features stories from over 30 rural communities across the nation that reveal the dynamic relationship between place and creativity. Technical\, social\, cultural\, artistic\, or a combination of all of these—every innovation is as unique as each community. \nSpark! Places of Innovation is part of MoMS\, a unique collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service\, state humanities councils across the nation\, and local host organizations. To learn more\, visit www.museumonmainstreet.org. \nBuyboats to Beaches: 100 Years of Resiliency on the Chesapeake Bay\nThe Captain Avery Museum will present a companion exhibit titled “Buyboats to Beaches – 100 Years of Resiliency on the Chesapeake Bay” during the Spark Places of Innovation exhibition\, showcasing the creativity and strength of marginalized communities. The exhibit focuses on the rise of summer colonies\, beaches\, and entertainment venues in Anne Arundel County created by Black and Jewish communities during segregation. As public spaces enforced exclusionary policies against both groups\, they built their own havens—such as Columbia Beach\, founded by Black Washingtonians in 1941\, and the Avery home in Shady Side\, which became “Our Place\,” a cherished waterfront camp for a group of Jewish families starting in the 1930s. \nNorman Gross Model Workboat Collection\nThe Captain Avery Museum will present a selection of Norman Gross’ detailed model Chesapeake workboats\, complete with painted backdrops\, miniature people\, and equipment\, along with personal stories reflecting the lives of Shady Side’s Black maritime community.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 4 from 9AM to 2PM\, the Odenton Heritage Society will open its doors for the town’s annual celebration of Odenton Day\, a joint effort by the Odenton Heritage Society\, Inc.\, Odenton Volunteer Fire Company\, the Greater Odenton Improvement Association\, and the Central Maryland Chamber. \nBeginning at 10AM\, OHS will offer free\, round trip\, guided tours by shuttle bus from the OVFC Firehouse located at 1425 Annapolis Road\, to the OHS Historical Center at 1367 Odenton Road. The tour will pass through Odenton’s Historic District and include three sites on the National Register of Historic Places. \nAt the OHS Historical Center visitors will have the opportunity to learn why Odenton is called “The Town the Railroads Built” while touring our free museum in the historic 1912 Old Masonic Hall. Stroll through Odenton’s history through captivating photographs\, artifacts\, and presentations. \nActivities at the Odenton Firehouse will include fire related demonstrations\, music\, entertainment\, activities for kids\, and displays by West County community organizations and businesses. There will be free hot dogs\, chips and drinks. \nAdmission to all activities is free. We hope to see you at both locations!
