Webinar – American Indian Tribes of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay region is steeped in the history of its indigenous tribes. Considering the essential role American Indians have played in the Chesapeake Bay, the importance of understanding that history cannot be overstated. Many different tribes live in the Chesapeake region, and their social, cultural, and political identities are extremely varied and complex. That includes different languages, distinct cultures, and a history of varied political structures and alliances. Today, there are tens of thousands of people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia who identify as American Indian.

At this webinar, CBF will speak with some of these individuals and leaders who have unique and important perspectives on current Chesapeake Bay issues. The webinar is free to attend.

Jane Austen Tour

Take an on-site tour of the Hammond-Harwood House that compares the customs and social graces of the Loockerman family, who lived in the Hammond-Harwood House in the early 19th century, with those of characters in Jane Austen novels.

Virtual Program – How Maryland’s New Abandoned Cultural Property Law Can Help Your Museum

Though Maryland’s 2020 Legislative Session was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s museum community won a major victory with the passage of Senate Bill (SB) 88 governing the stuff of a museum registrar’s nightmares: abandoned cultural property, which includes orphaned collections, doorstop donations, old loans, or found objects within the collection that have unclear ownership. But what does this mean for your institution? How can you make sure you are following the right steps to navigate abandoned property, and what is exempt from the bill?

Join MCHC Vice President of Collections & Interpretation, Allison Tolman, for a professional development webinar explaining how this new tool can be responsibly used at your museum or library. She will be joined by other professionals in the field, to answer your questions. This event is free to attend.

Virtual Lecture – Gardens and Gardening in Early Annapolis

The William Paca House is famous for its reconstructed eighteenth-century garden. A place for leisure, experimentation, artistry, and the production of food and medicine, William Paca’s garden—and gardens elsewhere in Annapolis and the British Atlantic World—were integral to everyday life. Join Bethany McGlyn as she explores several eighteenth-century Annapolis gardens, their construction and design, and the stories of the enslaved and servant gardeners whose expertise maintained them.

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

Collectors’ Day 2020

  • Date: Sunday, November 15
  • Time: 9:30 am – 5:00 pm
  • Location: Online
  • Host Organization: Hammond-Harwood House

Featuring “The Art of the Game: Cards, Horse Racing, and Tavern Life in the Early Chesapeake,” the fourth annual Collectors’ Day will be a virtual lecture series with an optional onsite reception. Lectures (via Zoom, to be accessed at attendees’ homes) will feature the taverns, game rooms, race tracks, and forested hunting grounds of America’s sporting past. Virtual lectures will be held from 9:30 am.-12:30 pm. Cost is $35 to participate.

You can also take an optional onsite tour at 3:00 pm. With the Hammond-Harwood House curator, tour participants will learn about gaming material culture. Outdoor wine and historic food pairing reception follows featuring historic recipes. speakers will be on site and available for questions. Includes the morning virtual lectures.
