Virtual Lecture – Uncorked! Wine, Objects & Tradition

  • Date: Tuesday, May 18
  • Time: 7:00 pm
  • Location: Online
  • Host Organization: Historic Annapolis

Leslie B. Grigsby, Senior Curator of Ceramics and Glass at Winterthur, presents a celebration of the objects and imagery created in response to society’s love of wine! Associated with religious ceremonies as well as entertainment, the beverage has been around for some 8,000 years. This lecture, originally inspired by Grigsby’s major exhibition by the same name at Winterthur (2012), presents a selection from the incredibly broad range of wine-related materials drawn from the Winterthur collections and promised gifts. From glassware and cellarettes to song sheets and paintings, the audience will share a look at how wine was marketed, consumed, and celebrated from the 1600s through the 1800s.

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

Lumbee community artist and scholar Ashley Minner and hip hop artist Shodekeh discuss with archival professionals Beth Saunders (UMBC) and Ashley Todd-Diaz (Towson) how shared stewardship has made their respective archival collections possible, ensuring cultural heritage items receive long term care while being maintained in their community contexts.
