POSTPONED Virtual Lecture – A Return to 1774: The 21st Century Restoration of the James Brice House

Join Michael K. Day, Senior Vice President, Capital Projects at Historic Annapolis, as he offers a behind-the-scenes look at the daunting task of researching, investigating, and painstakingly restoring one of the most iconic 5-part colonial mansions in Annapolis. Mostly shrouded in mystery for decades, the James Brice House Restoration Project will allow it to be open to the public like it never has before. The ultimate goal of this state-of-the-art restoration is to return both the interior and exterior of the house to its appearance when construction was completed in 1774. Of course, no tour of the Brice House would be complete without some discussion of the spirits that still walk its halls and climb its staircases…or not.

Presented in partnership with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, a live Q&A with Michael Day will follow the virtual video tour. Registration is required. This event is free to attend.

3rd Annual Women’s History Month Michelle Obama Awards

Celebrate the 2021 Michelle Obama Award recipients in honor of Women’s History Month. Now in its third year, this award is designed to recognize women in our county who embody former First Lady Michelle Obama’s spirit. Compassionate, graceful, and intelligent are some of the words many have used to describe Mrs. Obama. The women we honor this year possess these same characteristics. Each of them is doing incredible work in our communities in their own way.The theme for this year’s awards – “Her Story Is Our History”, speaks to the importance of recognizing the critical impact women have in our lives at all levels. In the words of Michelle Obama, “When women and girls rise, their communities and their countries rise with them.”

Hosted by the Caucus of African American Leaders (CAAL) in partnership with the Office of the County Executive, this year’s program will honor ten women who have had a meaningful impact in Anne Arundel County.

Webinar – Personal Resilience: The Mental & Physical Benefits of Open Space

Open space can help increase personal resilience. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped reveal the true value of the outdoors and public spaces. From recreation and nutrition, to mental clarity and much more, open space and access to nature can provide numerous benefits. However those benefits and access to greenspace has not historically been distributed equally or equitably for many people of color. Join Dr. Heidi Schrieber-Pan and Jennifer D. Roberts to delve into how open space can be a positive, transformational, place for all. Learn about nature’s ability to help individuals reduce anxiety and depression and improve overall wellness, while also learning how you can help your community understand and overcome historical and contemporary barriers that have led to unequal access for African Americans and other marginalized communities. Webinar is $25 per person.

Virtual Hearing on Four Rivers Boundary Amendment

The Maryland Heritage Areas Authority (MHAA) will hold a virtual public hearing on our organization’s application to amend and enlarge the officially-designated boundaries of our Heritage Area. This is a requirement for all amendments to Certified Heritage Area (CHA) boundaries. The hearing will include a request to enlarge the boundaries of the current heritage area to include an additional buffer to existing boundaries; a North County African American Trail; a Mid-County Cluster; a Jug Bay Cluster; recreational trails; and additional heritage tourism sites throughout Anne Arundel County. This hearing is free to attend.
