Virtual Lecture – America’s Birth Certificate: The Declaration of Independence

  • Date: Tuesday, August 17
  • Time: 7:30 pm
  • Location: Online
  • Host Organization: Historic Annapolis

The Declaration of Independence is a peculiar thing. It’s a literary masterpiece that was written jointly by a committee of fifty people. It’s short and punchy—just 1310 words long—but still somehow daunting and difficult to get to grips with (there’s a reason most of us have never read it in full and can only quote the first third of its second sentence). And what is it exactly? Is it a birth certificate announcing happy news, or a petition for divorce full of grievance and score-settling, or something else? Is it aimed at the American people, or King George, or someone else? Was it the first ever declaration of independence, or a cheap imitation of a genre already well established? What did people at the time make of it? What did it change? Why does it matter? Join University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell as he tackles the fascinating origins, misunderstood purpose, and extraordinary global legacy of the Declaration of Independence.

Registration is required. Cost to participate is $15 per household for General Admission or $10 per household for HA Members and Volunteers.

  • Time: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Location: Shiplap House, 18 Pinkney Street, Annapolis
  • Host Organization: Historic Annapolis

The hated Townshend Acts passed by the British government in 1767 taxed glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea, to which merchants in Maryland and other colonies responded by entering into a non-importation agreement, refusing to import British goods. Everything but the tax on tea was repealed in March 1770, and now, the non-importation agreements have fallen apart. Are we back to a new normal, or are tensions still simmering? And what might a new fight over tobacco and taxes mean for colonial Marylanders? Visit the Waterfront Warehouse, Shiplap House, and Hogshead on Pinkney Street to find out what everyday sailors, merchants, and female business owners think, and what it is like to raise children, cook dinner, and do your chores as history unfolds around you.

Cost to participate is $10 per person for General Admission; $8 per person for HA Members & Volunteers; $5 for Children (3-17); Free for Children 2 and under; Free for Blue Star Active Military Families.
