Winter Lecture: Tidewater by Steamboat

January 11, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Scope of Presentation

Jack will discuss the steamboats which took people and freight to and from Bay area communities in all kinds of weather every day. Another class of steamer that looked like the passenger and freight boats was dedicated solely to pleasure. Pleasure vessels carried thousands of people during the summer months to Bay area resorts like Tolchester Beach, Betterton, Bay Shore Park, Bay Ridge, Chesapeake Beach, Marshall Hall, and Colonial Beach.

Jack Shaum is a retired print and broadcast journalist who had a nearly 30-year career as a news anchor and reporter for news-talk radio station WBAL in Baltimore. From 2002 to August 2016, he wrote for The Bay Times and Record Observer newspapers in Queen Anne’s County. He was editor-in-chief of the quarterly journal of the Steamship Historical Society of America. He is the author of “Lost Chester River Steamboats: From Chestertown to Baltimore,” and co-author of “Majesty at Sea,” a history of the great four-funneled passenger liners. He has been an instructor in the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Washington College in Chestertown.
