Scope of Presentation
Unusual methods and inventions have developed to get answers about complex migratory life cycles and our understanding of how blue crabs move among habitats and what they do in the Chesapeake Bay. Tuck will explore the blue crab fishery in the Bay and crab production in other countries.
Presenter
Dr. Anson “Tuck” Hines is the Director and Marine Ecologist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). He has a B.A. in Zoology from Pomona College and a Ph.D. in Zoology from University of California at Berkeley. His research on coastal ecosystems includes Chesapeake Bay, Florida, California, Alaska, Belize, Japan, and New Zealand. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and has been a project leader on a diverse array of research programs. He has studied the biology of crabs around the world and is an expert on blue crabs. Tuck serves as Chair of the Smithsonian Diving Control Board, which oversees the safety of one of the nation’s largest scientific diving program. He is Adjunct Professor at University of Maryland College Park and has advised 22 postdoctoral fellows, 18 Masters and Doctoral students, and 140 undergraduate interns.
