Winter Lecture: Teaching American History Through its Battlefields

March 1, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Scope of Presentation

This presentation will discuss the history of battlefield preservation in America, and how through this preservation Americans can learn about their history and in turn it’s values and culture. Some of our nation’s most important principles and ideals, while embodied by certain documents, were in fact made real on battlefields through the sacrifices of citizen soldiers.

Jim Lighthizer: Jim’s years of public service began in 1979 when he was elected to the Maryland State Legislature. In 1982, he was elected to the first of two terms as Anne Arundel County Executive. In 1991, Jim was appointed as Maryland’s Secretary of Transportation, and in 1999, Jim accepted the presidency of the Civil War Preservation Trust. During Jim’s tenure as President of the Trust, the group has saved 40,000 additional acres and now boasts 50,000 members nationwide.
