Towards a More Perfect Union: A Series on the U.S. Constitution
In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary, we invite you to a continuing series of talks hosted by SERC archaeologist Jim Gibb, examining our country’s often bumpy road towards freedom and self-determination.
Article III: The Judiciary
Saturday, April 4, 2-3pm
Speaker: Dr. Jim Gibb, SERC Environmental Archaeology Lab
Article III concerns the federal judiciary, including the creation of the Supreme Court and such “inferior” courts as Congress deemed necessary. How many justices? “Inferior” courts? The Constitution is remarkably vague, the delegates leaving it to Congress to fill in the details. This presentation explores the federal judicial system and, unlike other presentations, reaches beyond the Convention to later developments, including the landmark Marbury v Madison case establishing judicial review.
This event is entirely in person. Attendees 12 years and older are welcome to join. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Talks are free, but space is limited, so advance signup is required!
