The Many Hats of Jack Johnson

African-American History Month Events with The NEA Big Read
Chesapeake Children’s Museum, Anne Arundel County Public Libraries, and many other community partners are putting on 5 full weeks of events and discussions inspired by The Big Smoke, a book of poems by Adrian Matejka about the life of Jack Johnson, first African-American Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World.

Arthur John “The Big Smoke” Johnson rose from harsh beginnings in Galveston, Texas, in 1878 to conquer the world both inside the boxing ring and out.

Vince Leggett, author, historical interpreter and founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake portrays Jack Johnson, who in 1908 became the first African-American Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World.
