Discover the abundant wildlife and plants in the wetlands along the Patuxent River, while learning about what made this waterway important to British and American forces during the War of 1812. Learn local history from National Park Service staff that most people are unfamiliar with, including the where the British landed before marching to, capturing & burning Washington DC.
Trips are 4 hours long and include: general orientation, basic paddling, and launching kayaks. Paddlers can expect to actively paddle for 2.5 to 3 hours. Kayaks, paddles, PFD’s (life vests), and guides provided.
The Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe or kayak through the water. Participants must be able to:
• Independently participate in all activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe body position.
• Manage all personal care and personal mobility independently.
• Effectively communicate with leaders and other participants.
For your safety you are required to have plenty of water (at least 32 oz pp), sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, closed toe shoes that can get wet and an extra set of dry clothes. If you lack any of these items, we can deny you participation!
Bring a lunch/snack.
Ages 13 and up. Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Fee $25 per person. Prompt program start time so please arrive by 9:45 am. If conditions do not allow for paddling, a hike will be substituted. Registration is required. For questions, call 410-222-8006 or email jugbay@aacounty.org.
