Lunch and Learn – Crownsville Hospital Patient Cemetery

The Crownsville Hospital Center was a psychiatric hospital located in Crownsville, Maryland. Alternatively titled ‘the Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland’, it was in operation from 1911 until 2004. This talk will focus on the research process on the hospital and recovering the names of those buried there, as well as sharing some of their stories.

Janice Hayes-Williams is a native of the City of Annapolis and specializes in African American History in Anne Arundel County. Her talk with share with us the forgotten history of the people who lived and died at Maryland’s Hospital for the Negro Insane at Crownsville. She leads a team to recover their names and stories and has led an annual “Say My Name Ceremony” in remembrance at the Crownsville site for almost 20 years. Ms. Hayes-Williams is currently working with Anne Arundel County Government in the County Executive’s office in collaboration with the Department of Recreation and Parks on special history projects including the creation of Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park and the UNESCO Port Marker Installation.
