Join SERC for a guided tour of the exhibits in the Woodlawn History Center, as we celebrate the 250th!
Woodlawn is the oldest building in the Smithsonian and one of its owners had a Revolutionary War connection! General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history, right here in Edgewater, Maryland.
The story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard.
Before or after your tour, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling), visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm! **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.
