Classic Wooden Sailboat Rendezvous and Race
September 17, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
On Saturday, the beautifully restored classic sailboats will be on display at the NSHOF docks. Some are available for boarding, and the owners are happy to address queries from individuals who walk the docks. In the afternoon, speakers will talk about the challenges and joys of maintaining a wooden sailboat. Around 3:00 p.m., radio controlled sailboats built by students from Tabor Academy will race around a course in the basin. On Sunday, the race begins at 11:00 a.m. off the U.S. Naval seawall at Triton Point. Last year, 23 boats participated, ranging in length from 18′ to 65′. Because of the variety of boat lengths and types, the race is called a Pursuit Race, where the slowest boats start first and the fastest start last. The starting sequence takes about one hour, with the last boat starting around noon. The boats circle the course three times. Best places for viewing the race are the U.S. Naval Academy seawall and the Eastport side of Spa Creek at 4th, 3rd, or 2nd Streets.
