The Annearrundell County Free School was established by the Colonial Assembly almost 300 years ago. Each of the then twelve existing counties in the state were expected to build a one-room schoolhouse with taxpayer money going for the purchase of the land and building of the schoolhouse. Students paid a tuition and one of the school’s most celebrated students was Johns Hopkins.
The Annearrundell County Free School has begun its Open House season. It will be open on Saturday, May 13, 2023 and Sunday, May 14, 2023 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Docents from the Anne Arundel Retired School Personnel Association (AARSPA) will be available to assist visitors with information about the collection of educational artifacts and the history of the building as a schoolhouse and, after the Civil War, as a residence.
