A lecture sponsored by Arundel Rivers and Historic London Town & Gardens
Professor Stan Allen, Director of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Aquaculture Genetics & Breeding Technology Center (ABC), will be a guest speaker. The ABC hatchery at VIMS currently operates the most extensive breeding program for oysters in the U.S., and arguably the largest in the world.
The invention of the Triploid has revolutionized oyster aquaculture worldwide, including its recent rapid growth in the lower Chesapeake Bay. More than 90 per cent of Virginia’s farmed oysters result from the production method they created. Oysters improve water quality through filtration, create invaluable habitat to countless aquatic species, and support an international aquaculture industry.
Oysters have been a mainstay of Chesapeake culture and economy for thousands of years, come find out what this exciting new scientific frontier has in store!
Coffee and refreshments will be available.
Free to attend, but pre-registration is required. Limited seats available.
