Downs Park is a nature-lover’s paradise nestled at the end of the Pasadena peninsula, along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The park offers visitors endless opportunities to enjoy nature through birdwatching, hiking on miles of wooded trails, expansive views of the Bay, and plenty of family-friendly picnic sites. Downs Park is also a popular destination for dog owners who love to let their four-legged friends splash and swim at the park’s dog beach. Anglers should be sure to bring plenty of bait to take advantage of bountiful fishing opportunities both along the main beach and on the park’s fishing pier. Two car-top boat launches also allow kayakers, canoers, and paddle-boarders to enjoy a day on the water. With one launch located on the Bay and the other located on Locust Cove which empties into Bodkin Creek, paddlers of all ages and experience levels are sure to have a great time. If the water is too chilly, visitors are welcome to pick up a game with friends at the park’s basketball or handball courts! The Friends of Downs Park, a non-profit organization that supports programming at Downs Park, holds a number of family-friendly events throughout the year including an Easter Egg Hunt, free Summer Concert Series, Halloween Trick or Treat Trail, Cookies & Cocoa with Santa, and Community Family Day. No matter their age or interests, Downs Park has something to offer every park visitor that will leave them wanting to visit time and time again.
Several facilities, including both indoor and outdoor, can be rented at Downs Park to host anything from family reunions to weddings. Three large pavilions and one small pavilion allow guests to enjoy the outdoors while still providing shade and cover from the weather. Mother’s Garden, a historical garden that dates back to the park’s former days as a private residence, is a popular option for outdoor weddings. Downs Park’s indoor rental facility, the Chesapeake Room, is available on the lower floor of the visitor center and offers beautiful wide views of the Bay.
