The Parole community was established soon after the Civil War, when the namesake “Parole” Camp disbanded in October, 1865. African-American individuals and families, some who had worked in and around Annapolis, and at the Camp during the War remained, building their lives and a community on the footprint of the Civil War era camp. Today many of those families who settled in Parole have descendants still living here. The community has severeal historic landmarks, including churches, a Rosenwald school and the Parole Health Center.
