Announcements and Openings This Weekend
What’s new and open in the Four Rivers Heritage Area this weekend? We’ve got a couple of exciting announcements below as our partners and sites continue to reopen to the public.
Hammond-Harwood House
Last week, we announced Hammond-Harwood’s soft reopening for members. Now, Hammond-Harwood House (19 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis) is open for public tours by reservation every day except Tuesday. Subjects include the social history of the families and enslaved people who lived in the house, architecture, and the collection of fine and decorative art. Two exhibitions are currently on view at the house. Decadent Décor: Global Imports in an Early American Port City features pieces imported from around the world during America’s early years. Highlights include a French-made George Washington clock, Spanish silver, British furniture, and Chinese porcelain. Objects are from the collection of the Hammond-Harwood House, as well as from other museums and historic sites. Slavery at Hammond-Harwood House is staged in the service hyphen and kitchen of the museum. Explanatory wall panels tell the stories of several enslaved women at Hammond-Harwood House. Artifacts on display are from the archeological and kitchen collections.
Annapolis Maritime Museum
Even though the Annapolis Maritime Museum is still closed for construction, public cruises aboard the historic skipjack Wilma Lee will be starting on Saturday, August 8 from the Annapolis City Dock. Built in 1940 by the well-known boat builder, Bronza Parks, and meticulously restored in 2019, the Wilma Lee offers an authentic setting for adults and students to connect to the Bay through both cultural and ecological lenses. Whether you’re visiting Annapolis or it’s your hometown, public cruises on the Wilma Lee are a perfect opportunity for a memorable date night, special celebration, or to simply wind down after a stressful week. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, cruises are limited to 23 passengers including captain and crew. All protocols are undertaken including social distancing and requiring masks while boarding, The boat is open air and there is space to socially distance.
