AASLH Conversations on Reopening Your Sites

Resources for MuseumsMany of our heritage sites are slowly beginning to open again to the public with new guidelines and safety measures in place. We understand the process can be overwhelming. If you’re still working on your reopening plan, and require further guidance, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) continues to make their recorded AASLH Conversation Series webinars available to both members and nonmembers. We’d like to express our gratitude to AASLH for being a consistent resource during the COVID-19 pandemic closings.

Recorded Webinar: AASLH Conversations: Guidelines and Procedures for Reopening Your Historic Site

Original recorded date: May 20, 2020

Many of us are scrambling to figure how to bring our historic houses and sites back on line. Where do you turn for Federal and State laws and regulations? What do you need to do to protect your visitors, volunteers, and staff? Will you phase your opening, limit visitation etc.? Join Ellen Busch, Sean Sawyer, and Kenneth Turino as they seek to offer these and other questions while offering practical information and guidelines for reopening.

Recorded Webinar: AASLH Conversations: You Are Not Alone: Reopening Small to Mid-Sized Institutions

Original recorded date: May 15, 2020

As the nation is looking toward a gradual reopening of businesses, what should small to mid-sized cultural institutions consider to assure patrons your team is doing all it can to make it safe to return to your place of business. What precautions have you taken, and what procedures have you instituted going forward? How have you adapted your content to virtual platforms and utilized social media to engage your audiences?

Presenters will explore prior disaster recovery, how they handled it, and how they are using those experiences to navigate the current COVID 19 recovery efforts. Small to mid-sized arts, culture, and history organizations across the country are contemplating questions around the eventual reopening of their sites to the public. Join this moderated conversation with museum leaders LaNisha Cassell and Kathleen Maher and cultural experience expert, Ray Giang as they share lessons learned during the reopening strategies after major disasters.

Finally, this is new on the AASLH Blog, “The New 3 Rs: Resilience, Responsibility, and Risk.” Authors Avi Decter and Ken Yellis discuss the field’s role in this era of crisis, activism, and conflict. “Museums need to reestablish themselves as forums for community conversation about the issues that most matter and most immediately affect our daily lives and the future directions of our nation.” Read more.
