Have you had the pleasure of experiencing all that the Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) has to offer? You may have heard of this renowned institution, perhaps from attending one of their famous events like their annual sock-burning, or from a field trip taken in grade school. But have you ever visited solely to immerse yourself in the museum’s extensive offerings? Established as a museum in the 1990s, the AMM has since transformed itself into a must-see destination for Annapolis. Through interactive and engaging exhibits, the museum beautifully captures the lifestyles and stories of the watermen who lived and worked here. From the hands-on displays to the stunning gallery, the AMM is sure to leave you wondering why you hadn’t visited sooner.

One of my favorite highlights of the museum is learning about the various ways people interact with the Chesapeake Bay. Despite the passage of time, fishermen, sailing, and oyster farming remain key parts of the region’s economy and culture today. As the former location of the McNasby Oyster Company, the museum offers fascinating insights into the transformation of oyster farming. Through visual displays, visitors can observe the entire process of shucking and preparing oysters for consumption. Did you know that oysters filter sediment and plankton?

The interactive exhibits at the museum are another standout feature. From playing games to listening to stories about the different boatyards, you’ll feel transported to another world. My favorite interactive component was the sailboat, which offers visitors the option of three virtual experiences complete with guided messaging and visuals that make you feel like a true waterman.

But the excitement doesn’t end there! The AMM also boasts an outdoor section that provides stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay while imparting knowledge. And if that’s not enough to pique your interest, there’s also an art gallery showcasing the works of renowned photographers like Jay Fleming, whose outstanding pictures of the Chesapeake Bay are not to be missed.
