T.O.R.E. Training: Learning, Connecting & Growing Through NPS Chesapeake Gateways

In June, I had the opportunity to participate in T.O.R.E. (Thematic, Organized, Relevant, & Enjoyable) Training through NPS Chesapeake Gateways. This three-day workshop brought together staff from nonprofits across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., along with NPS Chesapeake Gateways staff and interns, to learn how to create more engaging and meaningful interpretive experiences.

The workshop culminated in creative group presentations that challenged us to put what we had learned into practice. Each team developed an imaginative interpretive “tour,” taking visitors to places like the Land of Lost Socks, Florin, and even on adventures with Maryland cryptids. While the destinations were delightfully unexpected, every presentation focused on developing a clear, concise theme, organizing information in a way visitors could easily follow, making the content relevant to the audience, and, most importantly, ensuring the experience was enjoyable.

Beyond the training itself, one of the most rewarding aspects was getting to know others from across the NPS Chesapeake Gateways network. It was inspiring to connect with people from organizations throughout the region who share the same goal of creating memorable experiences and high-quality programming that help visitors discover and appreciate the Chesapeake’s rich natural, cultural, and historic resources.

Why should CCHA partners consider joining NPS Chesapeake Gateways? Being part of this regional network offers opportunities to grow professionally, build relationships, share ideas, and strengthen the experiences we provide to our visitors. Network partners may be eligible for professional development and training, technical assistance from National Park Service staff, and Chesapeake Gateways grants and other financial assistance. Participation can also increase an organization’s visibility through NPS communications, websites, mobile resources, and promotional materials.

Whether your organization operates a historic site, museum, cultural attraction, educational program, or supports the preservation and interpretation of the Chesapeake region in other ways, there may be an opportunity to become part of this network. You don’t have to do it all on your own. NPS Chesapeake Gateways provides a way to connect with like-minded organizations, tap into shared knowledge and resources, and become part of something much larger than any one organization.

I left the training with new ideas, practical interpretive tools, and a network of colleagues who are all working toward the same mission. I encourage our CCHA partners to explore what becoming part of NPS Chesapeake Gateways could mean for their organizations and the communities they serve.
