The Stephen Steward’s Shipyard is one of the only sites of armed conflict with the British in the American Revolution in Anne Arundel County. In 1781 British regulars from two ships anchored along the West River burned the shipyard in the middle of the night. This attempt, while successful, did not shut down the shipyard that was constructing, supplying, and repairing the vessels that defended Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay during the American Revolution. Katie Gill is an archaeologist and historic preservationist with a passionate interest in the history of the Chesapeake and beyond. She received her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2020 and her master’s degrees in Anthropology and Historic Preservation in 2024. Katie is the Heritage Program Manager at the Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area. This is where she began her work revisiting the Steward’s Shipyard Site.
